Doing so meant using one of Cristina Rapti\u2011Tzelepi&#8217;s decades-old embryos and racing to beat a government deadline.<\/p>\n<p> Just months after their 21\u2011year\u2011old son died in a road crash in October, Rapti\u2011Tzelepi, now 54, and her husband made the decision to pursue another attempt using an embryo frozen for 22 years.<\/p>\n<p> Rapti-Tzelepi was running up against the Greek government&#8217;s 54-year age limit for women to complete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/tag\/ivf\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">in vitro fertilization<\/a> procedures and secure approval from a national authority. In a hospital room brightened with pink balloons and flowers on Friday, the new parents were overcome with emotion.<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;We decided to give life a second chance, to make a new start, bring new life into our home and keep our family&#8217;s story going,&#8221; Rapti-Tzelepi said, sitting on her bed in black pajamas. &#8220;My wish for her is to grow up healthy and happy, full of joy like our first child, who filled our home with laughter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> The child was born using the woman&#8217;s embryo that had been frozen more than 22 years ago, an unusually long time for a frozen fertilized egg to be used to produce a pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p> Last year, an <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/baby-born-decades-old-frozen-embryo-longest-storage-ohio-couple\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Ohio couple welcomed a baby boy<\/a><\/span> developed from an embryo frozen for more than 30 years through a process known as &#8220;embryo adoption,&#8221; and earned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/world-records\/641719-oldest-human-embryo-used-in-a-successful-pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recognition<\/a> from Guinness World Records as the oldest human embryo used in a successful pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p> Dr. Kostas Pantos, Rapti-Tzelepi&#8217;s gynecologist and head of the Hellenic Society of Reproductive Medicine, argued that Greece&#8217;s age restrictions warrant review, noting the country&#8217;s steep birth rate decline.<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;The law is very strict: 54 plus one day is not allowed. He said that he was deeply grateful to the doctor for restoring hope to his family.<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;He took us by the hand and pulled us out of our deepest darkness,&#8221; Raptis said. &#8220;We escaped from that darkness, and I believe we have a lot to live for now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> The couple named their daughter Georgia in honor of their late son, Giorgos, also born thanks to IVF. They haven&#8217;t ruled out trying for another child \u2014 possibly by traveling abroad.<\/p>\n<p>As CBS News reported in November,\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/embryo-donation-on-the-rise-families-connection\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">embryo donation<\/a><\/span> is gaining in popularity in the U.S. Frozen donated embryo transfers in the United States nearly quadrupled from 2004 to 2019, according to a study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. It&#8217;s estimated there are currently more than 1 million frozen embryos in the U.S. \u2014 many from those reluctant to discard them after they are done with their cycles of
