He was not expecting to unlock hidden chapters from his family&#8217;s past.<\/p>\n<p>Miller did not know it at the time, but his new property was once a plantation. Named Sharswood, it was built in the 1850s by a slave-owning uncle and nephew who shared his last name.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I had known there was a &#8216;Miller Plantation,&#8217; I maybe could have\u2026 put a connection with the last name Miller and that plantation,&#8221; Miller told 60 Minutes in 2022. &#8220;But I&#8217;d never heard of a &#8216;Miller Plantation&#8217; or a &#8216;Miller&#8217; anything.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed__float-wrap\">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\" data-ads=\"{\" extrawordcount=\"\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2022\/05\/15\/2b66148b-9302-4273-9f8f-478b87045e35\/thumbnail\/620x349\/40699201811c6b70795ffeed2df2cc51\/ot-sharswooda-fredkaren.jpg#\" alt=\"ot-sharswooda-fredkaren.jpg \" height=\"349\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2022\/05\/15\/2b66148b-9302-4273-9f8f-478b87045e35\/thumbnail\/620x349\/40699201811c6b70795ffeed2df2cc51\/ot-sharswooda-fredkaren.jpg 1x, https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2022\/05\/15\/2b66148b-9302-4273-9f8f-478b87045e35\/thumbnail\/1240x698\/cad0d57733ce8d3189640d12647ec633\/ot-sharswooda-fredkaren.jpg 2x\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">Fred Miller (left) and his sister Karen Dixon-Rexroth (right).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/sharswood-air-force-veteran-plantation-ancestors-reclaiming-history-60-minutes-2023-02-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">This Sunday on 60 Minutes,<\/a><\/span>\u00a0correspondent Lesley Stahl interviewed Fred Miller and members of his family at Sharswood, speaking about what they unearthed about the property and its past inhabitants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fred Miller&#8217;s sister Karen Dixon-Rexroth, who initially convinced her older brother to buy the property, and their cousins Dexter Miller and Sonya Womack-Miranda, did most of the research into Sharswood&#8217;s past.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Something drew me to knowing the history of this place,&#8221; Dixon-Rexroth told Stahl. &#8220;I knew it was an old place from the 1800s, so I started from there, as far as looking at the previous owners, and also any records that were available online.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With time and the help of Karice Luck-Brimmer, a local historian and genealogist, the Millers were able to uncover documents that proved that their own ancestors were once enslaved at Sharswood.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since the revelation\u2026 I know that when the slaves brought food into the main house, they came up through the basement stairs,&#8221; Fred Miller told 60 Minutes. &#8220;And there&#8217;s a distinct wear on the basement stairs from years and years of traffic, of people walking up those stairs, I&#8217;m thinking, &#8216;Wow, these are my people.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When the 60 Minutes producing team of Shari Finkelstein and Braden Cleveland Bergan first visited Sharswood to meet the family and scout the location, they were part of a conversation between Dexter Miller and his former coworker Bill Thompson, whose family bought the property in 1917 and owned it for more than a century.
