Four major fires driven by strong <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/southern-california-wildfires-what-are-santa-ana-winds\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Santa Ana winds<\/a><\/span> have charred about 62 square miles, according to Cal Fire.<\/p>\n<p>Fire agencies say the suppressants \u2014 most often used to fight forest fires \u2014 are an invaluable tool. Strong winds can make it too dangerous to fly at the low altitudes needed for drops and can dissipate the retardant before it hits the ground. <\/p>\n<p>Besides Cal Fire, multiple agencies have dropped fire retardant and water, including the U.S. Forest Service, the Los Angeles and Ventura county fire departments, the city and the National Guard.<\/p>\n<h2>What is in aerial fire suppressants?<\/h2>\n<p>Aerial fire suppressants are generally a mixture of water, ammonium phosphate \u2014 essentially fertilizer \u2014 and iron oxide, which is added to make the retardant visible, said Daniel McCurry, a civil and environmental engineering professor at the University of Southern California. <\/p>\n<p>The Forest Service, which has used 13 aircraft to dump suppressants on the Los Angeles fires, says they help starve a fire of oxygen and slow the rate of burn by cooling and coating vegetation and other surfaces. <\/p>\n<p>Perimeter, the company that supplies fire retardant to the Forest Service and other agencies, says the phosphate changes the way cellulose in plants decomposes and makes them non-flammable. <\/p>\n<p>The fire suppressants are generally considered safe for people, but many worry about their potential effects on wildlife.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\"><span class=\"img embed__content\"><img alt=\"TOPSHOT-US-WEATHER-FIRE \" height=\"413\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2025\/01\/14\/59faeb99-5d0b-4a82-bb0e-edc59fcefa2f\/thumbnail\/620x413\/84eeaa37050979e7562ff313beb4d105\/gettyimages-2192878096.jpg?v=e306e7b9fefc168c00baa623d76d1eaf 1x, https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2025\/01\/14\/59faeb99-5d0b-4a82-bb0e-edc59fcefa2f\/thumbnail\/1240x826\/f952bbc6e929e497fa4fea5f4d2b5911\/gettyimages-2192878096.jpg?v=e306e7b9fefc168c00baa623d76d1eaf 2x\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\"><span class=\"embed__caption\">Pink flame retardant is seen on a car in the Mandeville Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, on Jan. 11, 2025, as the Palisades Fire continues to burn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                AGUSTIN PAULLIER\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Forest Service bans use of aerial suppressants over waterways and endangered species habitats, &#8220;except when human life or public safety are threatened,&#8221; due to potential health effects on fish and other wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>McCurry, from USC, said he and other researchers tested several suppressants and found heavy metals, including chromium and cadmium, in one commonly used by the U.S. Forest Service.<\/p>\n<p>McCurry said the study&#8217;s findings suggest that it&#8217;s &#8220;plausible&#8221; that fire suppressants could contribute to spikes of chromium and other heavy metals in waterways downstream of wildfires. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t quite have a smoking gun yet because it&#8217;s difficult, although not impossible, to prove where a heavy metal came from,&#8221; McCurry said. &#8220;We&#8217;re working on that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Perimeter, the manufacturer of the Forest Service&#8217;s fire retardant, said McCurry&#8217;s research was on a formulation that wasn&#8217;t used in California and is no longer used by the Forest Service. The company also says it doesn&#8217;t add metals, which it says are naturally present in all ammonium phosphate fertilizers, and that its aerial suppressants &#8220;are exhaustively tested by the USDA Forest Service and meet or exceed all health and safety standards.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Using flame retardants to protect the power grid<\/h2>\n<p>Several Los Angeles area power companies are also using flame retardants to try to help protect power poles and lines, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/power-companies-douse-los-angeles-power-poles-with-retardant-to-protect-power-grid-during-fires\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">CBS Los Angeles reported<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Crews have been working for days, stopping at as many power poles as possible along the edges of the wildfires \u2014the Palisades Fire along the Los Angeles coast and the Eaton Fire in the mountains above Pasadena and Altadena.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>First, they clear dry shrubbery from the area surrounding the poles, then they use their trucks to douse each power pole with fire retardant \u2014 the same substance that&#8217;s dropped by firefighting aircraft from above.
