The total fee is not yet confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world,&#8221; Iger and Kushner said in a joint statement. &#8220;We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. Jeanie Buss, daughter of the late Jerry, retained her position as Lakers governor despite last year&#8217;s deal, but it&#8217;s unclear what her role, if any, will be going forward under new ownership. Before last year&#8217;s sale to Walter, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/nba\/news\/the-most-expensive-franchise-sales-in-u-s-professional-sports-history-where-the-celtics-land-on-the-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous record<\/a>\u00a0was last year&#8217;s $6.1 billion sale of the Lakers&#8217; rival Boston Celtics.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the second venture into pro sports for the 75-year-old Iger, who in 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/walt-disney-ceo-bob-iger-and-journalist-willow-bay-to-become-angel-city-fcs-new-owners\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">purchased NWSL&#8217;s LA franchise<\/a>, Angel City FC, along with his wife, journalist Willow Bay. He served two tenures as Disney&#8217;s CEO, first from 2005 to 2020 and again from 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/who-is-josh-damaro-disney-ceo-bob-iger-successor\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">until this March<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kushner, 41, is the youngest son of U.S. Ambassador to France and Monaco Charles Kushner and brother of Jared, the son-in-law of President Trump. Joshua had purchased a minority stake in the Miami Heat last year.<\/p>\n<p>The Lakers&#8217; sale comes as the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NBAPR\/status\/2036821824747511993?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBA seeks ownership bids<\/a> for expansion franchises in Seattle and Las Vegas. The addition of two new teams would bring the league&#8217;s total to 32 franchises.<\/p>\n<p>On the court, the Lakers&#8217; new era will be led by superstar guard Luka Doncic, who was acquired in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/lakers-land-luka-doncic-from-mavericks-in-unexpected-trade-involving-anthony-davis\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">shocking trade<\/a> from the Dallas Mavericks in Feb. 2025. Doncic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/luka-doncic-extension-los-angeles-lakers\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">signed a contract extension<\/a> with the franchise last August.<\/p>\n<p>The new-look Lakers will also have to deal with the loss of one of the greatest players in league history, LeBron James, who left in free agency this summer.
