{"id":93401,"date":"2026-08-10T20:06:18","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T20:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/why-taylor-farms-is-facing-scrutiny-over-salmonella-and-cyclospora-outbreaks\/"},"modified":"2026-08-10T20:06:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T20:06:18","slug":"why-taylor-farms-is-facing-scrutiny-over-salmonella-and-cyclospora-outbreaks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/why-taylor-farms-is-facing-scrutiny-over-salmonella-and-cyclospora-outbreaks\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Taylor Farms is facing scrutiny over salmonella and cyclospora outbreaks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Taylor Farms, whose lettuce public health officials have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cyclosporiasis\/outbreaks\/07-26\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">identified<\/a> as the source of this summer&#8217;s widespread <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/taylor-farms-cyclospora-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">cyclosporiasis outbreak<\/a><\/span>, now faces another serious food safety issue.<\/p>\n<p>The Salinas, California, produce supplier recently recalled several <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/taylor-farms-jalapeno-recall-salmonella-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">food items made with jalape\u00f1os<\/a><\/span>\u00a0suspected of being contaminated with salmonella.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Jennifer McEntire, founder of food safety consulting firm Food Safety Strategy, drew an important distinction between the two recalls. Taylor Farms did not grow the jalape\u00f1os used to make a variety of pepper-based products, including pico de gallo salsa and guacamole, that it has now recalled due to salmonella risks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, Taylor Farms&#8217; Mexican operation is known to have produced the lettuce that has caused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cyclosporiasis\/php\/surveillance\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thousands<\/a> of cases of cyclosporiasis across the U.S. since May 1.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The issue with jalape\u00f1os is very, very different. The jalape\u00f1os came from a separate grower, handled by a different importer that sold them to a number of different entities,&#8221; McEntire told CBS News, noting that she views Taylor Farms&#8217; involvement in the jalape\u00f1o recall as &#8220;an extremely unfortunate coincidence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They happened to receive these jalape\u00f1os, so it puts them in the news once again,&#8221; she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Coast Citrus Distributors supplied the recalled peppers to Taylor Farms, which used them in some of its prepared foods. The peppers, which came from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, were used in products distributed to major grocers across the U.S., including Kroger, Target, Trader Joe&#8217;s, Walmart and Whole Foods.<\/p>\n<h2>Found in many foods<\/h2>\n<p>For consumers, of course, the latest food safety concerns can be alarming given that lettuce and jalape\u00f1o peppers are used in many of the roughly 1 billion meals Americans consume daily. Jalape\u00f1os can be sold whole, but are most often consumed as an ingredient in salsa, burritos, guacamole, dips, salads and other products.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lettuce is also an integral part of Americans&#8217; diets, with the recalled product making its way into meals <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cyclosporiasis-outbreak-taco-bell-lettuce-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">served at Taco Bell restaurants<\/a><\/span>, for example. Both recalls have caused alarm among consumers who fear some produce is unsafe to consume, or who no longer trust the systems designed to keep the nation&#8217;s food supply safe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although McEntire acknowledged the public health concerns amid the cyclosporiasis and salmonella outbreaks, she said U.S. safety monitoring systems are largely effective and more broadly described the nation&#8217;s food supply as &#8220;remarkably safe.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the mounting public focus on food safety could spur industry changes, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Food safety has always been the industry&#8217;s main concern because people eat produce fresh or raw,&#8221; McEntire said. &#8220;But given the issues we&#8217;ve encountered, there will absolutely be some bigger calls to action to bring the industry together, so it&#8217;s not each grower on their own. One person&#8217;s issue becomes everyone&#8217;s in the produce industry, so expect new efforts around collaboration and sharing of information.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The entire industry, she added, &#8220;will be highly motivated to make sure there is no weak link.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>What is Taylor Farms&#8217; history of food safety?<\/h2>\n<p>Taylor Farms has been connected to several previous food safety investigations and recalls.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the company supplied sliced onions served on McDonald&#8217;s Quarter Pounders that were contaminated with E. coli, leading to one death and more than 100 illnesses,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/outbreaks-foodborne-illness\/outbreak-investigation-e-coli-o157h7-onions-october-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a>\u00a0the FDA. The FDA found\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fda-report-e-coli-outbreak-onions-taylor-farms\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">dozens of violations<\/a><\/span>\u00a0at a Taylor Farms facility that supplied the onions, including dirty equipment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, Taylor Farms also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/safety\/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts\/taylor-farms-issues-recall-products-containing-onions-because-possible-health-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recalled<\/a>\u00a0several onion-containing products from a third-party supplier due to concerns that they could be contaminated with Salmonella.\u00a0<\/p>\n<section
