Her parents keep a running list of the people she hasn&#8217;t met: great-grandparents in the Midwest, family in Arizona, relatives who are sick and running out of time to fly. <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/debra-houry-cdc-measles-outbreak-rfk-jr\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Measles<\/a><\/span> is the reason.<\/p>\n<p>The official story in Utah is that the worst has passed. State guidance on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-measles-mmr-vaccine-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">measles shot<\/a> recently moved back to the usual 12 months, after a stretch of offering it early because spread had slowed. Utah&#8217;s own weekly case count has fallen sharply since its March peak. The national count hasn&#8217;t: it passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreak-us-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">last year&#8217;s full-year total<\/a> this week and is still climbing.<\/p>\n<p>None of that changes the math in Abby Laskey and Liam Hammons&#8217; apartment in Mill Creek, just outside Salt Lake City. Kasey is too young for the MMR vaccine. The earliest she can get a dose is six months, and with Utah back to standard guidance, more likely a year. Until then she depends on the one thing measles is built to erase: everyone else&#8217;s immunity.<\/p>\n<p>So her parents have rearranged their lives around a virus that&#8217;s supposedly receding. No museums. No indoor public spaces. No flying. They&#8217;re both vaccinated, both careful, both doing everything the system asks of them. And they still can&#8217;t introduce their daughter to the people who most want to meet her. &#8220;There&#8217;s not a guarantee,&#8221; Abby told me, &#8220;that by the time she&#8217;s fully vaccinated they&#8217;ll be able to meet her at all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then came the part I keep thinking about. To justify the caution to older relatives, they caught themselves borrowing authority from others.\u00a0<em>The pediatricians are really cautioning against travel<\/em>, they&#8217;d say, reaching for the white coat to make the case. It made them uneasy. They were, said Liam, &#8220;offloading blame and caution onto systems that are already &#8230; on the ropes \u2026 in the public perception.&#8221; You can hear the grandparent&#8217;s reply coming: those pediatricians are overreacting; when I was a kid, we all got measles. They didn&#8217;t love making every pediatrician in Utah the reason a family stayed home.<\/p>\n<h2>Vaccination used to spread the cost. Now it doesn&#8217;t.<\/h2>\n<p>Vaccination used to spread the cost of protection across everyone. When enough people are immune, a 6-week-old who can&#8217;t be is covered anyway, for free, by the wall around her. That wall is what&#8217;s thinning: national kindergarten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-vaccination-rates-us-counties-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">MMR coverage<\/a> has slipped from 95.2% five years ago to 92.5% last year, under the threshold epidemiologists use for herd protection. And when it thins, the cost doesn&#8217;t disappear. It moves. It settles on the people with the least protection and the least to do with the problem: the immunocompromised, the newborns, and the parents now playing bouncer on their own maternity leave.<\/p>\n<p>Abby kept circling something they couldn&#8217;t quite name: the scary stories, they said, of kids who &#8220;die of related things&#8221; years later. They&#8217;re describing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.celinegounder.com\/p\/measles-at-home-retreat-abroad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immune amnesia<\/a>. Measles doesn&#8217;t only make a child sick in the moment. It infects the immune cells that remember past infections and erases a chunk of that memory. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.aay6485\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">work led by the immunologist Dr. Michael Mina<\/a>, the effect lined up with higher deaths from\u00a0<em>other<\/em>\u00a0infections for about 28 months afterward. A child can recover from measles and stay more vulnerable to everything else for two years. Dr. Paul Offit and New York Times writer David Wallace-Wells call the social version &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/19\/opinion\/cdc-vaccine-panel-rfk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cultural immune amnesia<\/a>,&#8221; our forgetting of what these diseases actually did. Both kinds are running at once.<\/p>\n<h2>The official reports only tell part of the story<\/h2>\n<p>As of July 21, the U.S. had logged 2,295 confirmed measles cases in 2026, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.jhu.edu\/ivac\/resources\/us-measles-tracker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johns Hopkins University&#8217;s measles tracker<\/a>, surpassing all of 2025&#8217;s total of 2,289 and marking the highest count in 35 years, with more than five months still left in the year. (CDC&#8217;s own weekly count, released separately on Fridays, stood at 2,260 as of July 16. Both trackers are counting the same outbreak. They just close their weeks at different times.)<\/p>\n<p>Even short of that line, 2026 is running about 37% ahead of last year&#8217;s pace at the same point, and roughly 97% of cases are spreading within U.S. communities. Utah alone has counted 518, spread across 22 of its 29 counties, a share no other state has matched.<\/p>\n<p>Genomic sequencing ties the numbers to one continuous chain: the mutations in Utah&#8217;s cases trace back to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreak-texas-preventable-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">outbreak that started in West Texas<\/a> in January 2025, the same signature now confirmed in at least four other states.<\/p>\n<h2>The nation&#8217;s measles elimination status is now on the line<\/h2>\n<p>The United States&#8217; measles elimination status, held since 2000, requires no continuous domestic transmission for a full year. The Pan American Health Organization is scheduled to make its formal assessment in November, but based on the data, the U.S. has already lost its measles elimination status.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This didn&#8217;t have to be,&#8221; Abby said. They&#8217;re not that afraid of the virus itself, they told me; they&#8217;re angry it&#8217;s forcing the question at all. &#8220;If we&#8217;re losing the plot on this one,&#8221; Liam said, &#8220;what&#8217;s the next thing we lose the plot on?&#8221; He told me that &#8220;Trust is going to take a long time to build back up &#8230; a lot of unnecessary suffering and a lot of unnecessary deaths.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kasey&#8217;s parents will keep her home. They&#8217;ll see family at campgrounds and on beaches, outdoors, at a distance, and skip the flights.
