The FDA said the source of the outbreak was &#8220;not yet identified.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the agency told CBS News that the FDA had initiated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/outbreaks-foodborne-illness\/how-fda-uses-traceback-respond-foodborne-illness-outbreaks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a traceback<\/a>, which is when investigators follow the path of a potentially contaminated food product through the supply chain in an effort to identify the origins of a foodborne illness outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is an active investigation,&#8221; the spokesperson said. &#8220;We will provide updates as they become available.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is latest among several investigations the FDA has opened into cyclospora outbreaks around the country, including one <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/taylor-farms-lettuce-false-positive-cyclospora\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">linked to iceberg lettuce<\/a><\/span> from <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/taylor-farms-cyclospora-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Taylor Farms<\/a><\/span> that&#8217;s been blamed for thousands of illnesses in states including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. That investigation led Taylor Farms to voluntarily\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/outbreaks-foodborne-illness\/investigation-5-state-outbreak-cyclospora-illnesses-iceberg-lettuce-july-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recall<\/a>\u00a0all of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/taylor-farms-pulls-iceberg-lettuce\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">its iceberg lettuce<\/a><\/span> sourced from central Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>A separate outbreak has resulted in at least 10 cases, the FDA said, while yet another outbreak has ended but remains under investigation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that typically infects people through contaminated food or water. It causes a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/news\/south-florida-woman-cyclospora-diagnosis-july-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">gastrointestinal illness<\/a><\/span> called cyclosporiasis, which can result in symptoms like severe and sometimes &#8220;explosive&#8221; diarrhea.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cooking can kill the parasite, but health officials say just washing fruits and vegetables is not enough.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it has received reports of 1,645 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis since May 1, including 141 patients who were hospitalized. The CDC said it is aware of more than 5,100 cases that require further analysis to confirm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, state health departments in affected areas have tallied much higher numbers. Michigan health officials said Thursday that there are actually 7,664 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in the state, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/detroit\/news\/michigan-cyclosporiasis-outbreak-7664-cases\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">CBS News Detroit reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because cyclosporiasis is often underdiagnosed and underreported, the true number of illnesses is likely higher than what has been reported,&#8221; the CDC
