{"id":90043,"date":"2026-07-22T17:35:07","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T17:35:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/shipping-insider-says-nothing-is-going-through-the-strait-of-hormuz-despite-u-s-insisting-its-open\/"},"modified":"2026-07-22T17:35:07","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T17:35:07","slug":"shipping-insider-says-nothing-is-going-through-the-strait-of-hormuz-despite-u-s-insisting-its-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/shipping-insider-says-nothing-is-going-through-the-strait-of-hormuz-despite-u-s-insisting-its-open\/","title":{"rendered":"Shipping insider says &#8220;nothing is going through&#8221; the Strait of Hormuz, despite U.S. insisting it&#8217;s open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><em>London<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 The U.S. military&#8217;s Central Command repeated an assertion on Tuesday evening that has been made by the Trump administration many times over the last two weeks, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CENTCOM\/status\/2079727235431371205\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">insisting<\/a> that &#8220;despite Iranian aggression, the Strait of Hormuz remains open for commercial vessel traffic.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CENTCOM acknowledged in the same statement that Iran had launched more than 30 attacks on commercial vessels since the war began, which it said had &#8220;endangered hundreds of innocent mariners and undermined freedom of navigation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>President Trump, who has himself declared the strait open many times recently, threatened on Wednesday to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/iran-war-us-trump-strait-hormuz-oil-prices-red-sea-houthis\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">destroy an Iranian bridge or power plant<\/a><\/span> for every new attack targeting a ship in the vital waterway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite the U.S. president and military continuing to urge vessels to use a southern route through the strait, in defiance of Iran&#8217;s threats, few shippers seem willing to risk it. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Joint Maritime Information Center in Bahrain, a military partnership that includes the U.S., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukmto.org\/-\/media\/ukmto\/products\/update-074-jmic-advisory-note-21-july.pdf?rev=78818155c2d9471c943c4ac8e7cde703\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> commercial traffic in the Strait of Hormuz fell to a three-week low on Tuesday amid ongoing Iranian attacks. CBS News tracked just three commercial ships \u2014 two cargo vessels and the Chinese-owned tanker Hsin Ocean \u2014 transiting the strait on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Between July 13 and 19, only two ships transited the strait using the U.S.-backed southern route that hugs the coast of Oman. Both transits were dark, meaning the vessels had turned off their AIS broadcast systems, according to a Lloyd&#8217;s List <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lloydslist.com\/LL1157916\/Hormuz-tanker-transits-slump-as-attacks-mount-and-dark-voyages-dominate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2026\/07\/11\/6129c6d3-834a-4867-aac5-edc43c71e95c\/thumbnail\/620x776\/88ef5f89aa81b7e2211fe2b5622e3fc4\/gettyimages-2284647101.jpg#\" alt=\"IRAN-US-ISRAEL-WAR-ENERGY-OIL-TRANSPORT-SEA-PGSA-GULF-HORMUZ-UAE-OMAN-INFOGRAPHICS-GRAPHIC-MAP \" height=\"776\" width=\"620\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2026\/07\/11\/6129c6d3-834a-4867-aac5-edc43c71e95c\/thumbnail\/620x776\/88ef5f89aa81b7e2211fe2b5622e3fc4\/gettyimages-2284647101.jpg 1x, https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2026\/07\/11\/6129c6d3-834a-4867-aac5-edc43c71e95c\/thumbnail\/1240x1552\/db3d61612c15d332c7877578ad7aa624\/gettyimages-2284647101.jpg 2x\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">Map of the Strait of Hormuz showing the shipping corridor coordinated by Oman, the Iran-designated corridor, and the location of Iranian attacks on boats on July 6 and 7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                AFP\/Getty<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last week, Dimitris Maniatis, CEO of the Greek maritime risk management company Marisks, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/iran-war-trump-strait-of-hormuz-attacks-persian-gulf\/#post-update-b061733a\" target=\"_blank\" data-absolute=\"true\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">ship crews were unwilling to make the trip through the strait<\/a> following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/iran-us-war-strait-of-hormuz-trump-nato\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">breakdown of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire<\/a> that held for less than three weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s nothing physically obstructing the navigation of any vessel willing to transit the strait, and there are vessels that trade locally and are entirely unaffected by everything that&#8217;s going on, however, if we&#8217;re talking about large ocean-going, internationally owned-and-operated merchant vessels, nothing is going through,&#8221; Maniatis told CBS News on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>U.S. support for ships that choose to risk Iranian attacks by taking the Oman route is limited to air support as they attempt the transit as part of a convoy, Maniatis said, &#8220;and this is definitely not enough, because we see that, despite the best efforts and intentions of the U.S. Navy, vessels continue to be hit while they&#8217;re crossing the southern corridor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is no guarantee of safe passage,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Greek shipping giant Dynacom was one of the last international operators willing to send crews through the strait, but two of its ships were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/vessel-is-adrift-off-oman-after-being-struck-by-projectile-ukmto-says-2026-07-20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">struck<\/a> off the coast of Oman earlier this week, forcing both crews to evacuate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-07-20\/shipowners-offer-huge-bonuses-to-get-crews-to-sail-hormuz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0South Korea&#8217;s Sinokor Group was offering mariners six months of extra pay to make a return voyage through the strait.<\/p>\n<p>The Iranian threat, meanwhile, is spreading.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Iran&#8217;s Houthi rebel allies in Yemen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/iran-war-trump-us-troops-killed-wounded-jordan-base\/#post-update-f86d5708\" target=\"_blank\" data-absolute=\"true\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">said this week<\/a>\u00a0they would prevent Saudi Arabia from using its Red Sea ports to get energy products to Asian markets. They don&#8217;t even want to be on ships anymore.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At least 17 commercial mariners\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/iran-war-us-strait-of-hormuz-mariners-trapped\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">have been killed in 61 separate attacks in the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>\u00a0since the U.S. and Israel launched their joint war on Iran at the end of February, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.org\/en\/mediacentre\/hottopics\/pages\/middle-east-highlighted-incidents.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> the U.N.&#8217;s International Maritime
