The McLean, Virginia-based bank said Monday it found out about the vulnerability in its system July 19 and immediately sought help from law enforcement to catch the perpetrator.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI has arrested the person, reportedly in Seattle, according to a report in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/capital-one-data-breach-compromises-tens-of-millions-of-credit-card-applications-fbi-says\/2019\/07\/29\/72114cc2-b243-11e9-8f6c-7828e68cb15f_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>. Court records state a woman, identified as Paige A. Thompson, was arrested on charges of computer fraud and abuse Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/capital-one-data-breach-involves-tens-of-millions-of-credit-card-applications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to CNET<\/a>. Prosecutors say the hack took place between March 12 and July 17.<\/p>\n<p>Capital One said it believes that it is unlikely that the information was used for fraud, but it will continue to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While I am grateful that the perpetrator has been caught, I am deeply sorry for what has happened,&#8221; Capital One chairman and CEO Richard D. It will offer free credit monitoring services to those affected.<\/p>\n<p>The data breach affected about 100 million people in the U.S. and 6 million in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Computer fraud and abuse is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-wdwa\/pr\/seattle-tech-worker-arrested-data-theft-involving-large-financial-services-company\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Department of Justice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This report comes in the wake of news that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/equifax-to-pay-at-least-575m-as-part-of-ftc-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Equifax may have to pay up to $700 million over a 2017 data breach<\/a>, according to CNET.
