And over the weekend some Republican members of Congress <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/23\/us\/politics\/republicans-congress-town-halls-trump.html\" title=\"\">faced angry constituents<\/a> during visits to their districts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Reporters from The Times asked dozens of people of both parties and around the country about Mr. Musk\u2019s role in the government so far. Here are some of the responses, from those who welcomed the swift actions, others who expressed concern and questioned Mr. Musk\u2019s authority, and some who seemed baffled by what the unelected businessman was doing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-74720d1f\"><span>Damian Conley, 51, Caledonia, Wis.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Voted for Trump in 2024<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf he\u2019s doing what he says he\u2019s doing \u2014 looking for government cuts and waste \u2014 I\u2019m all for it, because our deficit can\u2019t keep going the way it\u2019s going again,\u201d Mr. Conley said of Mr. Musk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf he\u2019s, I don\u2019t know, skirting the system and trying to cut stuff that doesn\u2019t need to be cut, then I\u2019m going to have problems with it.\u201d Mr. Conley, who voted for Barack Obama before sitting out 2016 and 2020, said he was still waiting and watching. \u201cIt\u2019s too early in the presidency to know what\u2019s going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-329558fc\"><span>Matt Shockley, 54, Tucker County, W.Va.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Voted for Trump<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe\u2019s just an employee,\u201d said Mr. Shockley of Mr. Musk: If he does a bad job, they\u2019ll fire him. \u201cPay attention to what he\u2019s doing, not what he\u2019s saying and some stupid chain saw he\u2019s running around with.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-4909193a\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Emily Ainaire<\/strong>, 33, Dover, N.H.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Voted for Kamala Harris<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI don\u2019t understand why there aren\u2019t more people questioning it and just letting it happen,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was just dropped in there and everybody said, \u2018Sure.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-4fd7fedd\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">David Hite, 63, Bay Area, Calif.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Voted for Harris<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIs he the right guy or the wrong guy for that job? I don\u2019t know, but decisions have got to be made to reduce debt and spending,\u201d Mr. Hite said. \u201cI\u2019d just like to see those decisions be made transparently, really well-explained, and the data that they\u2019re seeing more proactively available.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-3d80cbd4\"><span>Michael Borg, 61, Loudoun County, Va.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Voted for Trump<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI think he\u2019s highlighted some things, like with U.S.A.I.D. and other agencies that are important, but I also think that there are things that U.S.A.I.D. has done that are good,\u201d said Mr. Borg, who initially opposed Mr. Trump in 2015 before supporting him in 2024. \u201cThere\u2019s got to be a balance. So, the pendulum for decades was in one direction, now it\u2019s swung to another. And I think there\u2019ll be a balance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-1b9a39e3\"><span>Scott Meyer, 62, Davis, W.Va.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Voted for Trump<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI laughed so hard that they scream like they do about the ways that Elon\u2019s got access to your information,\u201d said Mr. Meyer. \u201cDid people forget he did PayPal and all that stuff, and everything else that they just freely gave up? They didn\u2019t think about like when you signed up on Zelle to put money in your phone. You just gave it all up, and you give it up daily, without a care in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-72342b3e\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Maggie Keane, 32, Thomas, W.Va.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Voted for Harris<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe\u2019s not an elected official. It\u2019s very much overstepping. Elon is just a rich guy who\u2019s taking control of things, and that doesn\u2019t feel like democracy to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-4b982971\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Katrina Co<\/strong>, 43, Norcross, Ga.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Voted for Harris<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe has no business gutting our government the way he is doing. He and Donald Trump are actively dismantling the government for their own twisted reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-5106451f\"><span>Dannie Hinton, 60, Louisville, Ky.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Voted for Trump<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI am torn,\u201d said Mr. Hinton, adding that while he trusts Mr. Trump, Mr. Musk sometimes scared him. \u201cHe is a businessman and a genius, but I don\u2019t know what his intentions are. Everybody in politics needs to be more clear about what they want.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-1989a508\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Elliot Baker<\/strong>, 75, Portsmouth, N.H.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Voted for Harris<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cElon Musk is a brilliant man, and we need brilliant men. He\u2019s a creator. He\u2019s created a bunch of stuff which has benefited us. But he has, I think, gotten caught up in his own comic book. And power, it does corrupt.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-4e28e69e\"><span>Ken Gordon, 64, Monterey, Calif.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Did not vote<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf they didn\u2019t do it how they\u2019re doing it, would we have gotten anywhere?\u201d said Mr. Gordon, who voted for Mr. Trump in 2016, Mr. Biden in 2020, and did not vote in 2024. \u201cOr would we just be sitting around a table with everybody hemming and hawing and talking about doing something versus just going in there and slashing and burning what we need to slash and burn?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He added: \u201cIf we\u2019re gentle, I don\u2019t know if it would work.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-6296aeab\"><span>Bob Beaudette, 79, Phoenix, Ariz.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Voted for Trump<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf he\u2019s really finding all this fraud, more power to him. Finding Social Security payments to people who are over 100 years, if someone still getting a paycheck, that\u2019s ridiculous,\u201d he said, acknowledging that some claims about abuse, such as the checks to centenarians, had been disputed. \u201cHopefully the truth will emerge.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-3005c681\"><span>Noah Beljaars, 21, Flagstaff, Ariz.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Voted for Harris<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMy dad voted Republican and has a more optimistic view of Musk. I think what he\u2019s doing is unconstitutional at best and he\u2019s borderline fascist.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-4ad243f9\"><span>Tim Schock, 58, Spring Valley, Calif.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Did not vote<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cSo it\u2019s OK for us to go and get audited, but it\u2019s not OK for the government to get audited? Too bad. Because I\u2019m the employer, and they\u2019re the employees,\u201d said Mr. Schock, who said he would have voted for Mr. Trump but was out of state during the election. \u201cIf I\u2019m getting 45 cents out of every dollar I make going over to this and this project and that and that project, well, I have the right to know why, and where it\u2019s going. And if I don\u2019t like it, then don\u2019t send it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-1da280c3\"><span>Mariana Cardenas, 43, Chula Vista, Calif.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">Did not vote<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI believe he\u2019s a very smart man for what he does. But I don\u2019t think he belongs where he\u2019s at right now,\u201d said Ms. Cardenas, a green card holder who immigrated from Mexico in 2000. \u201cLike my grandma used to say, shoemaker needs to be making shoes.
