It said Mythos 5 \u2014 a version with fewer guardrails \u2014 would <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/mythos-anthropic-ai-project-glasswing-hacker-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">initially be made available<\/a><\/span> to a select group of major companies for testing purposes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just days after Fable 5 was released, Anthropic took it down. The company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/fable-mythos-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> the federal government had issued export controls that required it to block access to the model by foreign nationals \u2014 a broad order that Anthropic said effectively required it to disable the model.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement at the time, Anthropic said the government&#8217;s concerns appeared to focus on a potential &#8220;jailbreak,&#8221; or a technique for tricking the AI model and bypassing its guardrails. The company argued its safeguards were effective, and called the vulnerabilities discovered using the apparent jailbreak &#8220;relatively simple&#8221; and replicable with other AI models.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[We] disagree that the finding of a narrow potential jailbreak should be cause for recalling a commercial model deployed to hundreds of millions of people,&#8221; Anthropic said at the time. &#8220;If this standard was applied across the industry, we believe it would essentially halt all new model deployments for all frontier model providers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/26\/us-government-anthropic-claude-mythos5-ai.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNBC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/ai\/trump-administration-rolls-back-part-of-anthropic-model-ban-e8284434\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a> reported that the Commerce Department had begun allowing certain companies and government entities to begin using Mythos 5 again, a partial easing of the strict export controls.<\/p>\n<p>The more than two-week-long interruption for Fable 5 and Mythos 5 came as the Trump administration navigates the potential risks posed by artificial intelligence. Fears have mounted that increasingly powerful AI models could be <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/mythos-anthropic-ai-project-glasswing-hacker-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">a boon for cybercriminals<\/a><\/span> hunting for software vulnerabilities, but many <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DavidSacks\/status\/2064942701192134957?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">administration allies<\/a> are wary of government regulation of the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, President Trump <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-ai-executive-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">signed an executive order<\/a><\/span> meant to create a voluntary 30-day review process for the most advanced private AI models, in collaboration with the federal government. Mr. Trump had delayed signing the order, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-postponing-ai-executive-order-didnt-like-what-i-was-seeing\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">telling reporters<\/a><\/span> he didn&#8217;t want to &#8220;get in the way&#8221; of U.S. leadership of the AI industry or risk giving China an edge.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, shortly before Anthropic announced the restrictions were lifted, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SusieWiles47\/status\/2072099604481335711?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thanked companies<\/a> that had cooperated with the executive order, including on &#8220;advanced model access and guardrail testing and security.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, Anthropic clashed with the Pentagon over the company&#8217;s push for formal guardrails to prevent the military from using its Claude models \u2014 which were deployed in the military&#8217;s classified systems \u2014 to power fully autonomous weapons or mass surveillance of Americans.<\/p>\n<p>After the two sides failed to reach an agreement, Mr. Trump <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-anthropic-ai-order-federal-agencies\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">ordered all federal agencies<\/a><\/span> to stop using Anthropic&#8217;s AI technology, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/hegseth-declares-anthropic-supply-chain-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">labeled it<\/a><\/span> a &#8220;supply chain risk,&#8221; seeking to stop federal contractors from using Claude for military work. The administration cast Anthropic \u2014 long a backer of government oversight of AI \u2014 as ideologically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>Anthropic sued, and a federal judge blocked those restrictions, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/anthropic-ruling-judge-trump-pentagon-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">calling them<\/a><\/span> &#8220;Orwellian&#8221; and an effort to &#8220;cripple&#8221; the company.
