She said that the procedure was &#8220;the first step&#8221; in her latest treatment. Her care will include chemotherapy in the coming weeks, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The former professional tennis player and 18-time Grand Slam winner is considered a legend of her sport, and one of the most successful players of all time, having been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtatennis.com\/legends\/50020\/chris-evert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ranked first in women&#8217;s singles<\/a>\u00a0by the Women&#8217;s Tennis Association for 260 weeks after the rankings launched in 1975.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The association, which is the main organizer of women&#8217;s professional tennis globally, describes\u00a0Evert&#8217;s standout career as &#8220;the stuff of legend&#8221; and notes how her backhand form &#8220;revolutionized&#8221; the game.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-twitter-tweet embed--float-none embed--size-medium lazyload\" data-require=\"third-party\/twitter-widgets\">\n<div class=\"embed__content-wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/y7iVpLjoRU\" rel=\"noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/y7iVpLjoRU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chris Evert (@ChrissieEvert) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChrissieEvert\/status\/2070163987837391078?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noopener\">June 25, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Evert said the recurrence will prevent her from attending Wimbledon this year. Although retired from the court, Evert is often seen courtside at the world&#8217;s largest matches or appearing as a broadcaster or commentator. The upcoming Wimbledon Championships are scheduled to begin in London next week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Evert said she will also step back from other &#8220;professional commitments over the next few months to focus on&#8221; her health.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ovarian cancer is relentless, but I will stay optimistic and determined in continuing to fight this battle,&#8221; Evert said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Evert was initially diagnosed with ovarian cancer in December 2021. In January 2023, she announced that <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/chris-evert-cancer-free-diagnosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">she was cancer free<\/a><\/span>, but later said the cancer had returned in December of that year.<\/p>\n<p>About 70% of ovarian cancer patients will experience a recurrence of their disease, <a href=\"https:\/\/ocrahope.org\/for-patients\/recurrence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a>\u00a0the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<section
