For decades, Mr. Cordeiro, 51, has maintained his innocence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Friday, Mr. Cordeiro\u2019s sentence was vacated in a Maui courtroom because of new evidence, including DNA evidence that his legal team said showed that Mr. Cordeiro was not at the crime scene the night of the murder. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hawaii-innocence-project-maui-murder-release-27c43beb9518b42dd0803189c939e485\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Associated Press reported<\/a> that there were gasps in the courtroom as Judge Kirstin Hamman of the Maui Second Circuit Court in Hawaii said that \u201cthe judgment and sentence is vacated and the defendant is ordered to be released from custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Cordeiro said in an interview on Sunday that he hugged his lawyers after the judge issued her decision. \u201cIt was definitely a long-awaited relief,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Kenneth Lawson, a director of the Hawaii Innocence Project, which took up Mr. Cordeiro\u2019s case, choked up in an interview as he described sitting beside Mr. Cordeiro in the courtroom on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere was relief, there was joy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Andrew Martin, the prosecuting attorney for Maui County, did not respond to a request for comment. The A.P. reported that Mr. Martin\u2019s office planned to appeal and file a motion seeking to impose bail on Mr. Cordeiro\u2019s release. Mr. Cordeiro is a flight risk because of the murder charge, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">According to court documents, Mr. Blaisdell went to Maui\u2019s skid row on Aug. 11, 1994, with a man named Michael Freitas and $800 in cash to buy marijuana. Mr. Blaisdell\u2019s body was later found at the bottom of a ravine. Mr. Freitas, who died in 2020, changed the story he gave to the police several times, eventually implicating Mr. Cordeiro as the person who killed Mr. Blaisdell, Mr. Cordeiro\u2019s legal team said. (According to court documents, Mr. Freitas believed Mr. Cordeiro had snitched on one of Mr. Freitas\u2019s friends in an unrelated drug case.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Cordeiro was at his parents\u2019 house the entire day building a shelving unit, with witnesses and receipts corroborating his activities, according to the Hawaii Innocence Project.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Cordeiro\u2019s first trial ended in a hung jury, with only one juror voting to convict him, according to the Hawaii Innocence Project. Mr. Cordeiro was found guilty after a second trial, in part because jailhouse informants who, in exchange for leniency, gave testimony that connected Mr. Cordeiro to the murder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He was convicted of murder, attempted murder and robbery and was sentenced to life without parole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Hawaii Innocence Project argued last week that Mr. Cordeiro should be released because new evidence proved his innocence. That includes DNA testing on the inside of the jeans that Mr. Blaisdell was wearing the day he was killed, which found \u201can unidentified DNA profile\u201d but no traces of Mr. Cordeiro\u2019s DNA, the court documents filed by Mr. Cordeiro\u2019s attorneys said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Hawaii Innocence Project also argued Mr. Cordeiro had an ineffective defense team and was a victim of misconduct by prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence to show that the state intentionally used false testimony, and she rejected the claim of prosecutorial misconduct, The A.P. reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After he was released, Mr. Cordeiro went to visit his mother\u2019s gravesite. On Saturday, he visited his grandparents\u2019 graves. He is staying at his parents\u2019 house on Maui, and his family has been helping him settle in, buying him clothes and feeding him, he said. They have been his \u201crock,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m starting over from scratch,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Cordeiro attended church with his family on Sunday morning, and the sermon was about forgiving those who harm you. He has learned to forgive those who implicated him in Mr. Blaisdell\u2019s murder, he said. It felt as if the priest was speaking directly to him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt was a perfect message,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was a perfect sermon.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside
