{"id":82631,"date":"2026-05-29T14:11:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-29T14:11:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/judge-temporarily-blocks-justice-dept-work-on-1-7-billion-anti-weaponization-fund\/"},"modified":"2026-05-29T14:11:25","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T14:11:25","slug":"judge-temporarily-blocks-justice-dept-work-on-1-7-billion-anti-weaponization-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/judge-temporarily-blocks-justice-dept-work-on-1-7-billion-anti-weaponization-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge temporarily blocks Justice Dept. work on $1.7+ billion &#8220;anti-weaponization&#8221; fund"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><em>Washington \u2014 <\/em>A federal judge temporarily blocked the Justice Department from moving forward with work on the new $1.7+ billion Anti-Weaponization Fund, including making any payouts.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.vaed.596617\/gov.uscourts.vaed.596617.31.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brief order<\/a>\u00a0dated Thursday that the temporary hold allows her time to consider whether to grant longer-term relief sought by a group of plaintiffs who are <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-anti-weaponization-fund-legal-questions\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">challenging the new fund<\/a><\/span>, which was announced by the Justice Department earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Brinkema&#8217;s order prevents the Justice Department from &#8220;taking any further action pursuant to the creation or operation&#8221; of the program &#8220;to ensure that no funds are irreversibly disbursed&#8221; from it. It covers the transfer of money to the fund, consideration of any claims submitted and disbursement of any payments.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Floyd, a former federal prosecutor who investigated and prosecuted people involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol, and Jonathan Caravello, a California professor who was arrested while protesting an immigration raid, as well as nonprofits, filed their lawsuit last week arguing that the fund is unlawful.<\/p>\n<p>They\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.vaed.596617\/gov.uscourts.vaed.596617.1.0_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a>\u00a0that the fund is a &#8220;collusive agreement&#8221; between President Trump and his administration that &#8220;has no congressional authorization, no basis in law, and no accountability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Anti-Weaponization Fund was <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-settles-10-billion-lawsuit-against-irs\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">created by the Justice Department<\/a><\/span> as part of a settlement of Mr. Trump&#8217;s civil lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service over the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/doj-settlement-trump-bans-irs-taking-action-against-him\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">leak of his tax returns<\/a><\/span> by a former government contractor.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department said the program aims to &#8220;provide a systematic process to hear and redress claims of others who suffered weaponization and lawfare.&#8221; A five-member board would determine payouts from the $1.7 billion pot.<\/p>\n<p>But the Trump administration has come under pressure over the fund, including from Republicans on Capitol Hill, due to concerns that people involved in the Jan. 6 attack would seek and receive payments. Mr. Trump <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-jan-6-pardons\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">granted clemency<\/a><\/span> to more than 1,500 people who were convicted of crimes stemming from the Capitol assault and has suggested they were treated unfairly.<\/p>\n<p>There have not yet been any official announcements by the Justice Department naming the five commission members who would approve claims and set the criteria for <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/who-could-benefit-from-trumps-1-7-billion-weaponization-fund\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">who would be entitled<\/a><\/span> to a cut of the fund.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit is one of many filed in recent days to stop the fund&#8217;s implementation. Two other law enforcement officers who clashed with rioters on Jan. 6 <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-anti-weaponization-fund-legal-questions\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">sued<\/a><\/span> to block the fund, as have government oversight and accountability groups.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Legal experts, however, are <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-anti-weaponization-fund-legal-questions\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">skeptical<\/a><\/span> that the lawsuits could obtain permanent relief
