They just have one request."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>In southwest Atlanta, Black-owned businesses are keeping the history of their neighborhoods alive \u2013 and it all starts with a cup of coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Black-owned caf\u00e9s and cooperatives in the area, many inspired by trailblazing local businesswoman Lottie Watkins, are creating spaces that help share stories about the city&#8217;s rich culture and promote Black entrepreneurship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Atlanta was ranked the worst city for <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/media\/9-american-cities-with-the-worst-income-inequality\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">income inequality<\/a><\/span> in a 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/money\/economy\/cities-with-most-income-inequality-in-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">GOBankingRates<\/a> report. Aaron Fender, co-founder of Portrait Coffee, wants to help bridge that gap and hopes his small shop can be a catalyst for the community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Following a trailblazer&#8217;s footsteps<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>He&#8217;s following in the footsteps of Watkins \u2013 the first Black woman in Atlanta to become a licensed real estate broker and founder of Lottie Watkins Enterprises in 1960, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carlmwilliams.com\/obituary\/MrsLottie-Watkins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to her obituary<\/a>. She left her corporate job with Nordstrom to follow the path of her grandmother, mother and aunts who owned restaurants in Aberdeen, Mississippi.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They call me Titi.&#8221; Ingram said. &#8220;We&#8217;re the first aunt and uncle of this Cascade area.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We stand on that 10 toes down, like you come here, you&#8217;re going to be greeted warmly and you&#8217;re gonna be treated right, and you&#8217;re probably gonna be called &#8216;baby&#8217; or &#8216;boo&#8217; or whatever by me or somebody else in the kitchen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ingram doesn&#8217;t just fill patrons up with warm soups and delectable grilled cheese croissants. She said she also serves &#8220;pure love.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s what I got my whole life from the women that raised me, is love and acceptance of everybody,&#8221; Ingram said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A simple request<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Connected to Cafe Bartique is The Ke&#8217;nekt Cooperative, founded by Kiyomi Rollins, a longtime Westview resident. In Atlanta, it&#8217;s not just coffee shops ushering gentrification.
