Here&#8217;s what to know."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>UnitedHealthcare said on Tuesday it is eliminating &#8220;prior authorization&#8221; requirements for 30% of medical services that previously required insurer approval, a policy shift that could eliminate red tape and speed access to patient care.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes amid pressure on the health insurance industry to limit prior authorizations, the process by which health care providers such as doctors or hospitals obtain approval from patients&#8217; insurance carriers to deliver care.<\/p>\n<p>Prior authorizations have long drawn criticism for the time they require of physicians&#8217; offices and for hindering patients&#8217; access to care, with the American Medical Association\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/system\/files\/prior-authorization-survey.pdf#link=%7B%22role%22:%22standard%22,%22href%22:%22https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/system\/files\/prior-authorization-survey.pdf%22,%22affiliate%22:%22%22,%22target%22:%22_blank%22,%22absolute%22:%22%22,%22linkText%22:%22finding%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finding<\/a>\u00a0that such offices spend an average of 12 hours per week seeking insurer approval for medical treatments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Critics say those hours would be better spent providing medical care, while some patients report <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/health-insurance-preauthorization-patients\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">being denied treatment<\/a><\/span> by their insurance companies.<\/p>\n<p>UnitedHealthcare, the largest U.S. health insurer, said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedhealthgroup.com\/newsroom\/2026\/2026-05-05-uhc-cuts-prior-authorization-requirements-by-30-percent.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>\u00a0that prior authorization is required for 2% of the medical services covered under its policies. About 92% of those are approved within 24 hours, the company said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Prior authorization is an essential safeguard but should only be used when it truly protects patients and improves care,&#8221; UnitedHealthcare CEO Tim Noel said in a statement. &#8220;Eliminating these requirements is one more way we are working to make it easier for patients to get the care they need when they need it and ensure doctors can spend more time with their patients.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Former UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thomson was <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/midtown-manhattan-shooting-hilton-hotel\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">shot and killed<\/a><\/span> in December 2024.
