They would serve in the fraud division as special assistant U.S. attorneys, focusing on public benefit fraud schemes involving people living in the country illegally.<\/p>\n<p>The move also comes as staffing levels across the Department of Justice \u2014 including many U.S. attorney&#8217;s offices \u2014 have been stretched thin by <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/mass-departures-justice-dept-boon-for-law-firms-legal-groups-campaigns\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">widespread departures<\/a><\/span> and difficulties in hiring new attorneys. Many U.S. attorney&#8217;s offices have also been contending with <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/tsunami-immigration-detention-cases-strains-doj-us-attorneys-offices-across-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">a flood of habeas petitions by immigrants<\/a><\/span> who have been swept up in the Trump administration&#8217;s mass detention policy.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Trump administration has focused on pursuing fraud investigations involving government benefit programs in places such as <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/minnesota-fraud-schemes-what-we-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Minnesota<\/a><\/span> and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/california-fraud-crackdown-los-angeles-hospice-arrests\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">California<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Acting Attorney General\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/acting-attorney-general-todd-blanche-open-to-permanent-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Todd Blanche<\/a><\/span> said at a news conference earlier this month that the new fraud division would primarily be staffed by combining various offices within the department that handle mostly criminal fraud involving health care, taxes, benefits and corporations.<\/p>\n<p>Blanche also suggested the new division would be open to accepting criminal referrals from the White House \u2014 a departure from prior norms instituted after the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/watergate-at-50-the-political-scandal-that-changed-washington\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Watergate
