At the same time, Powell has steadfastly maintained that the Fed&#8217;s interest rate and other policy decisions should be based on economic data, while resisting political pressure from elected officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am committed to ensuring that the conduct of monetary policy remains strictly independent,&#8221; Warsh said in his testimony.<\/p>\n<p>The issue of Fed independence has grown more pressing in recent weeks, as the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/us-iran-war-trump-ceasefire-pakistan-peace-talks-ultimatum\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Iran war<\/a><\/span> has driven U.S. energy prices higher, pushing inflation to its <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cpi-report-today-march-2026-inflation-iran-war-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">fastest pace<\/a><\/span> in almost two years.<\/p>\n<h2>Hawk to dove?<\/h2>\n<p>In recent months, Warsh has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-15\/trump-fed-chair-contender-kevin-warsh-ready-to-cut-interest-rates?embedded-checkout=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signaled support<\/a>\u00a0for cutting the Fed&#8217;s benchmark interest rate, suggesting that AI could help keep prices down by accelerating economic productivity \u2014 a &#8220;dovish&#8221; pivot from his former &#8220;hawkish&#8221; views on inflation during his tenure as a Federal Reserve board governor from 2006 to 2011.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In today&#8217;s hearing, we will be curious to see whether Warsh i) sticks to his dovish bias, or ii) acknowledges the risks to price stability from the layering of supply shocks,&#8221; Bank of America economists Aditya Bhave and Stephen Juneau wrote in an April 21 research note.<\/p>\n<p>In his prepared statements, Warsh also signaled he&#8217;s willing to listen to the White House on some matters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am equally committed to working with the Administration and Congress on non-monetary matters that are part of the Fed&#8217;s remit,&#8221; he wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Powell exit timing unclear<\/h2>\n<p>A majority of the 24-member Senate Banking panel must vote in favor of Warsh&#8217;s nomination to advance it to the full Senate for a vote, with approval in the chamber also requiring a simple majority.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Warsh is widely expected to be confirmed to succeed Powell, whose term expires on May 15,\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/who-will-run-federal-reserve-senate-doesnt-confirm-trump-pick-kevin-warsh\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">one potential roadblock<\/a><\/span>\u00a0is Sen. Thom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina, who previously said he wouldn&#8217;t approve the nomination until the Department of Justice concludes an <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-threatens-fire-fed-chair-jerome-powell-legal-hurdles\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">investigation<\/a><\/span> into Powell.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s unclear who will run the central bank if the Senate is unable to confirm Warsh by next month. Powell has said he <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-threatens-fire-fed-chair-jerome-powell-legal-hurdles\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">plans to remain<\/a><\/span> at the Fed in his role as a governor as long as the DOJ probe continues.<\/p>\n<section class=\"content__body--footer\">\n<p
