{"id":6852,"date":"2025-02-17T19:05:14","date_gmt":"2025-02-17T19:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/elon-musks-doge-presence-at-the-irs-raises-concerns-about-taxpayer-data-security-refund-delays\/"},"modified":"2025-02-17T19:05:14","modified_gmt":"2025-02-17T19:05:14","slug":"elon-musks-doge-presence-at-the-irs-raises-concerns-about-taxpayer-data-security-refund-delays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/elon-musks-doge-presence-at-the-irs-raises-concerns-about-taxpayer-data-security-refund-delays\/","title":{"rendered":"Elon Musk&#8217;s DOGE presence at the IRS raises concerns about taxpayer data security, refund delays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>The presence of Elon Musk&#8217;s <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-doge-elon-musk-findings-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">cost-cutting task force<\/a><\/span>, the Department of Government Efficiency, at the IRS is sparking fresh concerns from Democratic lawmakers about the safety of taxpayer information, and whether the group&#8217;s work could cause delays in taxpayers receiving their refunds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finance.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/wyden_warren_letter_to_irs_021725.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Feb. 17 letter<\/a> to the IRS, Senators Ron Wyden and Elizabeth Warren, both Democrats, cited reports that DOGE is &#8220;pressuring the IRS to agree to a memorandum of understanding (&#8220;the MOU&#8221;) which would give software engineers working for Elon Musk at DOGE broad access to IRS systems, property and datasets which include the private tax return information of hundreds of millions of American citizens and businesses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>DOGE is reportedly requesting access to the IRS&#8217; Integrated Data Retrieval System, or IDRS, which would provide the group with access to tax data for individuals and businesses, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2025\/02\/16\/doge-irs-access-taxpayer-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according<\/a> to the Washington Post. DOGE is currently at the IRS, a White House official confirmed to CBS News. The IRS didn&#8217;t immediately return a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of DOGE view its efforts as a way to cut what they see as bloated federal spending at a time when the nation&#8217;s outlays are outstripping its tax revenue, pushing the federal debt to an all-time high of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fiscaldata.treasury.gov\/americas-finance-guide\/national-debt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$36 trillion<\/a>. But the group&#8217;s efforts have also sparked several lawsuits, with consumer advocates and Democratic lawmakers raising alarms earlier this month after DOGE gained access to the Treasury Department&#8217;s\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/musk-treasury-social-security-access-federal-payment-system-trump\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">payment system<\/a><\/span>, which stores personal data for most Americans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>IRS data is particularly sensitive, given that it reflects financial details for millions of Americans and businesses, ranging from their income, employers, losses, investments, dependents and other items. Under the IRS taxpayers&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/taxpayer-bill-of-rights-8#:~:text=IRS%20Publication%201%2C%20Your%20Rights,the%20taxpayer%20or%20by%20law.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bill of rights<\/a>, &#8220;information [taxpayers] provide to the IRS will not be disclosed unless authorized by the taxpayer or by law.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-video embed--type-content_video is-video embed--float-none embed--size-medium \"><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/irs-reportedly-planning-to-give-doge-access-to-sensitive-taxpayer-data\/\" class=\"embed__headline-link\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__icon\"><br \/>\n            <svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><use xlink:href=\"#icon-video\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__headline\">IRS reportedly planning to give DOGE staffer access to sensitive taxpayer data<\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__video-duration\">02:35<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                      <\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Software engineers working for Musk seeking to gain access to tax return information have no right to hoover up taxpayer data and send that data back to any other part of the federal government and may be breaking the law if they are doing so,&#8221; Wyden and Warren wrote in the Feb. 17 letter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The senators pointed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/26\/6103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">privacy regulations <\/a>in the tax code that they said provide &#8220;strong legal protections&#8221; for taxpayer data, noting that violation of those laws can result in incarceration or other criminal penalties. They added that even if the DOGE employees are employed at the Treasury Department, which oversees the IRS, they may still be violating the law by accessing taxpayer data.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are serious statutory and regulatory restrictions on when employees outside the Treasury Department may gain access to tax return information,&#8221; the letter said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It added, &#8220;To date, no information on DOGE employees or any others executing orders on Musk&#8217;s behalf have revealed any clear, stated purpose as to why they need access to return information, whether they have followed all required laws to gain access to IRS systems, and what steps the IRS has taken to ensure that inspection of tax return is contained to authorized personnel and not disclosed to any unauthorized parties.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Delays to IRS tax refunds?<\/h2>\n<p>Wyden and Warren also raised concerns about DOGE&#8217;s impact on tax refunds this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DOGE&#8217;s work at the IRS comes as the tax agency is in the middle of the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/irs-tax-date-2025-january-27-refund\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">current tax season<\/a><\/span>, when about 140 million individual tax returns are expected to be filed before the April 15 deadline. For many households, their tax refund check \u2014 which last year averaged more than $3,100 \u2014 is often their biggest cash influx of the year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are also extremely concerned that DOGE personnel meddling with IRS systems in the middle of tax filing season could, inadvertently or otherwise, cause breakdowns that may delay the issuance of tax refunds indefinitely,&#8221; the Feb. 17 letter said. &#8220;Any delay in refunds could be financially devastating to millions of Americans who plan their budgets around timely refunds every spring.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the IRS is preparing to fire thousands of probationary workers in the middle of tax season, the Associated Press reported, citing two sources familiar with the agency&#8217;s plans. It&#8217;s unclear how many IRS workers could be impacted, however, the AP noted.
