Here&#8217;s what to know about the weather phenomenon."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>The weather phenomenon known as El Ni\u00f1o could form later this year, potentially pushing global temperatures to record heights. <\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a 50% to 60% chance of El Ni\u00f1o developing during the July-September period and beyond, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. <\/p>\n<p>The World Meteorological Organization will issue an update on El Ni\u00f1o on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what you need to know about El Ni\u00f1o and its cooler sister, La Ni\u00f1a:<\/p>\n<h2>How was El Ni\u00f1o named?<\/h2>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o and La Ni\u00f1a are two phases of a natural climate pattern across the tropical Pacific known as the El Ni\u00f1o-Southern Oscillation, or ENSO. <\/p>\n<p>Peruvian and Ecuadoran fishermen coined the term El Ni\u00f1o (&#8220;the boy&#8221; or &#8220;the Christ Child&#8221;) in the 19th century for the arrival of an unusually warm ocean current off the coast that reduced their catch just before Christmas. <\/p>\n<p>Scientists chose the name La Ni\u00f1a as the opposite of El Ni\u00f1o. Between the two events, there is a &#8220;neutral&#8221; phase.<\/p>\n<h2>How does El Ni\u00f1o produce its warming effect?<\/h2>\n<p>El Ni\u00f1o can weaken consistent trade winds that blow east-to-west across the tropical Pacific, influencing weather by affecting the movement of warm water across the vast ocean. <\/p>\n<p>This weakening warms the usually cooler central and eastern sides of the ocean, altering rainfall over the equatorial Pacific and wind patterns around the world. <\/p>\n<p>The extra heat at the surface of the Pacific releases energy into the atmosphere that can temporarily drive up global temperatures, which is why El Ni\u00f1o years are often among the warmest on record. <\/p>\n<p>El  Ni\u00f1o occurs every two to seven years. <\/p>\n<p>It typically results in drier conditions across southeast Asia, Australia, southern Africa, and northern Brazil, and wetter conditions in the Horn of Africa, the southern United States, Peru and Ecuador. <\/p>\n<h2>New records ahead?<\/h2>\n<p>The last El Ni\u00f1o occurred in 2023-2024 and contributed to making 2023 the second highest year on record and 2024 the all-time high. <\/p>\n<p>Carlo Buontempo, director of the European Union&#8217;s Copernicus Climate Change Service, said in January that 2026 could be &#8220;another record-breaking year&#8221; if El Ni\u00f1o appears this year. <\/p>\n<p>However, El Ni\u00f1o&#8217;s impact would be higher in 2027 than in 2026 if it develops in the second half of this year, said Tido Semmler, a climate scientist at Ireland&#8217;s National Meteorological Service. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It takes time for the global atmosphere to react to the El Ni\u00f1o,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Having said this, there is a risk of 2026 being the warmest year on record even without El Nino, due to the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">global warming<\/a><\/span> trend,&#8221; Semmler told the Agence France-Presse news agency. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;2027 would face an increased risk of getting a record warm year if El Nino developed in the second half of 2026,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<h2>What about La Ni\u00f1a?<\/h2>\n<p>The latest La Ni\u00f1a episode was relatively weak and short-lived, starting in December 2024 and due to enter a neutral phase during the February-April period. <\/p>\n<p>La Ni\u00f1a cools the eastern Pacific Ocean for a period of about one to three years, generating the opposite effects to El Ni\u00f1o on global weather.  <\/p>\n<p>It leads to wetter conditions in parts of Australia, southeast Asia, India, southeast Africa and northern Brazil, while causing drier conditions in parts of South America. <\/p>\n<p>La Ni\u00f1a did not stop 2025 from being the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/climate-change-2025-critical-mark-eclipsed\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">third hottest<\/a><\/span> on record. <\/p>\n<h2>New NOAA determination formula<\/h2>\n<p>NOAA has adopted a new way of determining El Ni\u00f1o and La Ni\u00f1a events. <\/p>\n<p>The old Oceanic Ni\u00f1o Index compared the three-month average sea surface temperature in one region of the Pacific with a 30-year average in the same area. <\/p>\n<p>But as the oceans have been warming rapidly, that old 30-year average can be out of date. <\/p>\n<p>The new method, the Relative Oceanic Nino Index (RONI), compares how warm or cool the east-central Pacific is compared to the rest of the tropics.  <\/p>\n<p>NOAA says RONI is a &#8220;clearer, more reliable way&#8221;
