The four players wore USA jerseys with their gold medals draped from their necks.<\/p>\n<p>Knight opened by saying: &#8220;It was going to be just us, but we thought we&#8217;d invite the guys, too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The remark was a clear reference to a controversy that arose when the men received a congratulatory call from President Trump following their 2-1 overtime win against Canada on Feb. 22 at the Milan Cortina Games.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the team over a speakerphone, Trump invited the men to his State of the Union speech, before adding he&#8217;d have to also invite the women, too. The president later said if he didn&#8217;t invite the women, he&#8217;d risk being impeached, which led to the players laughing at a comment many saw as sexist.<\/p>\n<p>Knight on Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/olympics\/news\/usa-hockey-hilary-knight-president-donald-trump-joke-2026-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">referred to the joke<\/a> as being &#8220;distasteful and unfortunate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think the guys were in a tough spot,&#8221; Knight said on Wednesday. &#8220;It&#8217;s a shame that this storyline and narrative has blown up and is overshadowing our connection, genuine interest in one another and cheering each other on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many of the men, meanwhile, said they laughed while being caught up in the celebration. Boston Bruins goalie <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/jeremy-swayman-us-mens-hockey-trump-call-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Jeremy Swayman acknowledged<\/a><\/span> they &#8220;should have reacted differently&#8221; to Mr. Trump&#8217;s remarks, and his teammate <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/news\/charlie-mcavoy-trump-womens-mens-hockey\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Charlie McAvoy apologized<\/a><\/span> &#8220;for how we responded&#8221; to the president&#8217;s call.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. women, who also <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/2026-milan-cortina-winter-olympics-womens-hockey-gold-medal-us-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">beat Canada 2-1 in an overtime thriller<\/a><\/span> three days prior to the U.S. men&#8217;s gold medal win, politely declined Mr. Trump&#8217;s invitation due to travel plans. The players traveled commercially and returned to North America late Monday evening, well after the men, who traveled on a charter flight paid for by the NHL and NHL Players&#8217; Association.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Hughes scored the overtime goal for the men.<\/p>\n<p>Keller scored the overtime goal for the women, with Knight tying the game in the final minutes of regulation.<\/p>\n<p>Knight plays for the PWHL&#8217;s Seattle Torrent, and made the trip to New York City a day after being placed on long-term injured reserve.
