{"id":6752,"date":"2025-02-17T08:29:35","date_gmt":"2025-02-17T08:29:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/armed-bandits-in-brazil-pursue-new-loot-ozempic\/"},"modified":"2025-02-17T08:29:35","modified_gmt":"2025-02-17T08:29:35","slug":"armed-bandits-in-brazil-pursue-new-loot-ozempic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/armed-bandits-in-brazil-pursue-new-loot-ozempic\/","title":{"rendered":"Armed Bandits in Brazil Pursue New Loot: Ozempic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Around 10:30 p.m. on a Friday in late January, David Fernando, a pharmacist, was working behind a counter at a drugstore in S\u00e3o Paulo when a man walked up to him and flashed a gun. \u201cHe asked for money from the register and medications from the refrigerator,\u201d Mr. Fernando said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">These days, pharmacists in S\u00e3o Paulo \u2014 Brazil\u2019s largest city \u2014 know exactly what thieves mean when they say \u201cmedications from the refrigerator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">They\u2019re after Ozempic, Wegovy and Saxenda, the injectable weight-loss drugs many Brazilians covet but that most can\u2019t afford, in a country obsessed with body image but where obesity is on the rise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The thief made off with five boxes, each of which typically holds a month\u2019s supply and costs 700 to 1,100 Brazilian reais, or about $120 to $190, while the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.br\/planalto\/en\/latest-news\/2024\/04\/average-per-capita-income-in-brazil-surges-by-11-5-to-reach-12-year-high\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">average monthly income<\/a> is about $300.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though the armed robbery unnerved Mr. Fernando, 36, it was not exactly a surprise. The same pharmacy was held up for the same drugs twice in late 2024, he said. Now a security guard is posted outside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Four blocks north, another pharmacy has taken even greater precautions after a police officer <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.band.uol.com.br\/noticias\/brasil-urgente\/videos\/idosa-e-ferida-durante-roubo-de-ozempic-em-farmacia-de-sp-17276519\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">interrupted an Ozempic robbery<\/a> in August, resulting in a shootout that left an older woman injured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On a recent afternoon two armed guards stood watch, one inside the front door and the other near a back room where the refrigerated weight-loss drugs are kept.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While a smattering of media reports show thieves are after Ozempic elsewhere in the world \u2014 including late-night break-ins at pharmacies in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/2024\/11\/ozempic-targeted-in-smash-and-grab-pharmacy-heists-in-michigan.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan<\/a>, and in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cope.es\/emisoras\/galicia\/a-coruna-provincia\/santiago\/noticias\/llevan-ozempic-dos-farmacias-santiago-hay-mercado-negro-seguro-que-20240527_3318435\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Santiago de Compostela<\/a>, Spain \u2014 Brazil has become a prime global hot spot for criminals coveting the hugely popular weight-loss drugs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">S\u00e3o Paulo, in particular, has become a nexus because it is by some measures Brazil\u2019s richest city with many wealthy neighborhoods where plenty of pharmacies stock the drugs because enough people can afford them. And these days thieves have little problem finding buyers on WhatsApp and Facebook groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The targeting of pharmacies has left workers fearful and has led some stores to reduce their supply of weight-loss drugs. The robberies are \u201cdefinitely a growing trend,\u201d said Pedro Ivo Corr\u00eaa dos Santos, a police chief in S\u00e3o Paulo State\u2019s Department of Criminal Investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Pharmacies are often easy targets, the police chief added. \u201cMany operate 24\/7, storing the product in a fridge with no real security, only protected by the pharmacist,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A New York Times analysis of a S\u00e3o Paulo State database found that robberies of pharmacies in which Ozempic, Wegovy or Saxenda were stolen jumped notably in the last three years, from a sole recorded episode in 2022 \u2014 four boxes of Ozempic taken from a single drugstore \u2014 to 18 robberies in 2023, and 39 last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The numbers are almost certainly undercounts, since about half the reported robberies did not specify the medications taken.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/rdsaude.com.br\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">RD Sa\u00fade<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/grupodpsp.com.br\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Grupo DPS<\/a>, two companies that own pharmacy chains in S\u00e3o Paulo where many of the robberies have taken place, declined to comment. Many independent pharmacies say they no longer keep the drugs in the store.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAnyone who stocks Ozempic can\u2019t work in peace,\u201d said Wilson Martins, the manager of Farma O Imperador, an independent pharmacy in western S\u00e3o Paulo. \u201cPeople ask \u2018Do you have Ozempic?\u2019\u201d he added. \u201cNo, we don\u2019t. And that way, we don\u2019t get robbed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Customers who want one of the weight-loss drugs now must order it in person and make an appointment to pick it up. But for good measure, Mr. Martins, 72, still keeps a leather-sheathed machete behind the counter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some criminal gangs have been robbing trucks making wholesale Ozempic deliveries, Mr. Corr\u00eaa dos Santos said. One gang that the police dismantled last year included employees of a transport company.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Drug producers and distributors must report losses of medications resulting from crimes or other reasons to Anvisa, the Brazilian agency that regulates food and drugs. Its figures show that 4,770 Ozempic injection pens were stolen or lost in 2023 and surged to 8,220 pens in 2024.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The rash of robberies of weight-loss drugs comes amid soaring sales of the medication in a country where achieving a finely tuned body is revered and that, like many countries, is growing fatter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The percentage of adults in its largest cities considered obese increased to about 24 percent in 2023 from nearly 12 percent in 2006, according to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.br\/saude\/pt-br\/centrais-de-conteudo\/publicacoes\/svsa\/vigitel\/vigitel-2006-2023-estado-nutricional-e-consumo-alimentar\/view\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a Health Ministry study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Several Brazilian celebrities have <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uol.com.br\/splash\/noticias\/2024\/12\/12\/famosos-que-ja-admitiram-uso-de-ozempic.htm\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">spoken publicly<\/a> about using Ozempic or similar drugs, including singers Luiza Possi, Wesley Safad\u00e3o and Jojo Todynho.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe wave of thefts began when social media started openly discussing the drug, particularly as celebrities and influencers showcased dramatic weight loss,\u201d said Renata Gon\u00e7alves, the head of a union of pharmacists for the state of S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even Rio de Janeiro\u2019s mayor, Eduardo Paes, said during his campaign in 2024 that he \u201ctook a lot of Ozempic\u201d and lost about 65 pounds, and pledged to make the drug available for free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cRio will be a city without chubby people anymore,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Brazil, Ozempic sales grew from $27.5 million in 2019, to $621.6 million in 2023, the last year for which complete figures were available, according to IQVIA, a global provider of health care data. (The Brazilian market still pales in comparison to the United States, where sales totaled $30.3 billion in 2023.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Rodrigo Lima, who has worked for pharmacy chains for two decades and is now head of operations for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/ultrafarma.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ultrafarma<\/a>, a S\u00e3o Paulo-based chain, said other high-cost pharmacy products have been targeted in the past.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the high cost of Ozempic, he said, has \u201csparked a huge demand for these items, leading to specialized gangs with an eye on that slice of the market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While it\u2019s fairly easy to sell and buy stolen weight-loss drugs on the web, criminals may not be able to ensure buyers about the quality of the drugs once they are taken out of cold storage. Several pharmacists in S\u00e3o Paulo repeatedly stressed that just a few hours at room temperature renders the medications useless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey take the medications out to the car in a trash bag,\u201d said Andrea Lima, the manager of a branch of the Drogaria S\u00e3o Paulo chain where a policeman foiled an attempted robbery last May. \u201cHow long do they leave it in the trunk?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-11\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ultrafarma\u2019s strategy, said Mr. Lima, has been to install better security cameras and reduce stock in company-owned stores.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-12\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One Ultrafarma store that was robbed in 2023 has gone even further, said Leandro Rodrigo Santos, the store\u2019s manager. It no longer keeps Ozempic in stock so customers have to order it and have it delivered to their home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But even that has risks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Wellington Vieira, chief of a Rio de Janeiro police division that investigates consumer-related crimes, said the agency had received reports of groups who order multiple boxes of Ozempic to a home and then pull a switcheroo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When a delivery worker arrives, two people answer the door. One tries multiple times to pay with an invalid credit card, while the other accepts the package and switches out the real Ozempic for a counterfeit version. When the purchase is eventually canceled, the delivery worker unknowingly returns to the pharmacy with the fake medication.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-13\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ozempic bandits may soon confront a force more powerful than the police: economics. Novo Nordisk\u2019s Brazilian patent for semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, expires in 2026, and pharmaceutical companies are racing to get approval to produce generic versions that will almost certainly cause prices to tumble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For now, some pharmacists are turning to a higher power for protection. Elis Regina Peixoto manages a pharmacy in eastern S\u00e3o Paulo that has so far gone unscathed. \u201cIn the name of Jesus,\u201d she said, \u201cwe will not be robbed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside
