He will remain in his role as NIH director.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The move, first reported by The New York Times, is the latest in a period of turmoil for federal health agency leadership. The CDC has been led by an acting director, Jim O&#8217;Neill, who was appointed in August. He replaced Senate-confirmed CDC Director <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/cdc-susan-monarez-debra-houry-senate-testimony-rfk-jr\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Susan Monarez<\/a><\/span>, who was ousted after <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cdc-director-susan-monarez-ousted\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">less than one month<\/a><\/span> in the role.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharya gained his reputation during the COVID-19 pandemic as a vocal critic of the CDC&#8217;s response. Deeply opposed to lockdowns and highly skeptical of the effectiveness of masking, Bhattacharya, then a Stanford Medical School professor, took to writing and speaking out on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The CDC last month <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cdc-childhood-vaccines-heres-what-they-prevent\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">scaled back<\/a><\/span> the recommended number of childhood vaccines, sparking alarm from pediatricians and public health experts who worry <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/how-many-lives-vaccines-have-saved\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">diseases that have been tamed<\/a><\/span> by scientific advances may roar back with a vengeance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bhattacharya told Congress earlier this month that people should get vaccinated against <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/south-carolina-measles-outbreak-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">measles<\/a><\/span>, amid the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreak-us-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">largest outbreak<\/a><\/span> in the U.S. in decades, and said he hasn&#8217;t seen evidence that vaccines cause autism, even as the president and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have added fuel to that theory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have not seen a study that suggests any single vaccine causes autism,&#8221; Bhattacharya told a Senate panel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<section
