He said he had confessed the infidelity a week before his win and that she broke up with him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I told her a week ago. And it&#8217;s been the worst week of my life,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/sports\/olympics\/winter-olympics-2026-norwegian-athlete-admits-cheating-girlfriend-rcna258389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NBC reported<\/a>\u00a0Laegreid as saying, citing Norwegian Broadcasting Corp. &#8220;I had a gold medal in life, and there&#8217;s probably a lot of people out there who look at me differently now, but I only have eyes for her. Sports has taken a bit of a back seat these past couple of days. Local media reported that his ex-girlfriend, who remains unidentified, was not happy with the display.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I did not choose to be in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it,&#8221; local media reported her as saying, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/olympics\/news\/2026-winter-olympics-norway-norweigan-biathlete-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to CBS Sports<\/a>. &#8220;We have had contact, and he is aware of my positions on this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His tearful confession was criticized by some who said it took the focus away from teammate Johan-Olav Botn, who won the gold medal in that event.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Laegreid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs8.com\/article\/sports\/olympics\/trending-in-milan-cortina\/norwegian-biathlete-tearful-confession-olympic-gold-medal-regret-apology\/507-181c9ab3-6254-43e4-85fe-dfc6fbad07ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said in a statement<\/a>\u00a0issued by the Norwegian team that he deeply regretted &#8220;sharing this personal story on what was a day of celebration for Norwegian biathlon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Quentin Fillon Maillet of France won Friday&#8217;s sprint race \u2014 his <span class=\"link\"><a
