A spokesperson for Gabbard said <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-gabbard-presence-fbi-search-fulton-count-election-records\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Mr. Trump and Bondi asked Gabbard<\/a><\/span> to be present for the search.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.gand.355087\/gov.uscourts.gand.355087.22.1_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">FBI affidavit<\/a> filed with a U.S. magistrate judge to justify the warrant to search the Fulton County elections office <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fulton-county-fbi-search-court-records-2020-election\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">revealed that the criminal investigation<\/a><\/span> originated from a referral sent by Kurt Olsen, who works in the White House. Olsen, a lawyer, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-election-result-email-doj-pressure\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">worked to overturn the results<\/a><\/span> of the 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>Olsen spoke multiple times with Mr. Trump on Jan. 6, 2021, when Congress met to reaffirm President Biden&#8217;s win in the 2020 race, according to a House select committee that investigated the assault on the U.S. Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump has repeatedly claimed without evidence that the 2020 election was &#8220;rigged&#8221; and called for prosecutions stemming from that election.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department has taken several actions focused on elections since Mr. Trump returned to the White House. Last year, it began seeking complete voter registration lists from nearly all 50 states, which includes birth dates, addresses and partial Social Security numbers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At least 11 states have turned over the voter rolls or said they plan to. The Justice Department has filed lawsuits against 24 states and Washington, D.C., for refusing to hand over their voter registration lists. Suits against <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/california-federal-judge-rejects-effort-by-justice-dept-to-gather-sensitive-voter-roll-data\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">California<\/a><\/span>, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/judge-tosses-justice-department-lawsuit-seeking-oregon-voter-rolls\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Oregon<\/a><\/span> and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/judge-rejects-trump-administration-michigan-voter-data\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Michigan<\/a><\/span> have since been dismissed.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async
