Layoffs often rise in January as companies adjust their payrolls to meet financial targets for the forthcoming year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The top three reasons employers cited in cutting jobs last month were losing a commercial contract, stock market and economic conditions, and restructuring.<\/p>\n<h2>Most layoffs by industry<\/h2>\n<p>The sectors that dismissed the most employees in January, according to Challenger, Gray and Christmas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Transportation: 31,243 job cuts<\/li>\n<li>Technology: 22,291 job cuts<\/li>\n<li>Health Care: 17,107 job cuts\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Chemical: 4,701 job cuts<\/li>\n<li>Media: 510 job cuts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Driving the January layoffs were large cuts by several major companies. Those included Amazon, which said it was\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/amazon-layoffs-16000-jobs-latest-round\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">cutting 16,000 jobs<\/a><\/span>, and delivery company UPS, which plans to slash its workforce by<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ups-layoffs-30000-company-cfo-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">\u00a030,000 this year.<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"component list recirculation component--type-recirculation inject-freepress \">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>The spurt in layoffs signals that businesses are &#8220;less-than-optimistic about the outlook for 2026,&#8221; Andy Challenger, chief revenue officer at Challenger, Gray and Christmas, said in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/pinterest-layoffs-workforce-artificial-intelligence\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Pinterest<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and chemical manufacturer\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/dow-job-cuts-layoffs-4500-ai-artificial-intelligence-automation\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Dow<\/a><\/span>\u00a0also announced layoffs, which they attributed in part to their adoption of\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ai-layoffs-2026-artificial-intelligence-amazon-pinterest\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">artificial intelligence<\/a><\/span>. Employers directly cited AI in announcing nearly 8,000 layoffs in January, 7%, Challenger&#8217;s data shows.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"min-height:573px\" id=\"datawrapper-vis-nZ09a\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/nZ09a\/full.png\" alt=\"Number of layoff announcements in January, from 2009 to present (Bar Chart)\"\/><\/div>\n<p><amp-iframe width=\"100\" height=\"100\" layout=\"responsive\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin\" resizable=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.datawrapper.de\/_\/nZ09a\/?v=5\"> <\/amp-iframe><\/div>\n<p>Some experts have questioned the extent to which AI is playing a role in layoffs, with economists telling CBS News that companies could be using AI as a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ai-layoffs-2026-artificial-intelligence-amazon-pinterest\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">pretext for job cuts<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think these companies are doing layoffs because they know AI can replace workers, but I think they&#8217;re investing in it,&#8221; Andrew Stettner, senior director for economic security at the nonprofit National Employment Law Project, told CBS News.<\/p>\n<p>Although layoffs have edged up, the nation&#8217;s <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jobs-report-december-2025-economy-trump-hiring-bls\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">unemployment rate remains low<\/a><\/span> by historical standards, at 4.4%. The Federal Reserve on Jan. 28 said that the economy was expanding at a &#8220;solid pace,&#8221; while noting that inflation remains above its 2% annual target.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the latest economic signals show that job openings around the country are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/archives\/jolts_02052026.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">falling<\/a>, while more Americans are filing for unemployment benefits. Initial jobless claims jumped to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/ui\/data.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">231,000<\/a> for the week ending Jan. 31, up sharply from the previous week, according to the labor data released on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Revelio Labs, a workforce intelligence company, reported a 64% increase in the number of workers who received layoff notices between December 2025 and January.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, the spike in layoffs isn&#8217;t a sign of a broader economic malaise, Stettner emphasized. For example, the construction sector is booming as demand for AI services and the data centers required to power them increases.
