{"id":63657,"date":"2026-02-04T14:33:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T14:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/apple-google-face-pressure-to-remove-x-and-grok-from-their-app-stores\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T14:33:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T14:33:13","slug":"apple-google-face-pressure-to-remove-x-and-grok-from-their-app-stores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/apple-google-face-pressure-to-remove-x-and-grok-from-their-app-stores\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple, Google face pressure to remove X and Grok from their app stores"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>A coalition of nearly 30 advocacy groups is calling on Google and Apple to remove access to social media platform X and its AI app, Grok, from their app stores after Grok allowed users to generate sexualized <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/grok-safeguard-lapses-minors-minimal-clothing-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">images of minors and women.<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The organizations, which focus on child safety, women&#8217;s rights and privacy, expressed their concerns in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/weareultraviolet.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FINAL-Organizational-Sign-On-Letter_-Demand-Apple-Google-Remove-Grok-from-App-Stores-1.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">letters<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday to Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, claiming that Grok&#8217;s content violates the technology companies&#8217; policies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We demand that Google leadership urgently remove Grok and X from the Play Store to prevent further abuse and criminal activity,&#8221; the groups said, using the same language in its letter to Apple.<\/p>\n<p>Apple and Google didn&#8217;t immediately reply to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, xAI, the company that developed Grok, said in a safety\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Safety\/status\/2011573102485127562\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">update<\/a> posted on X that it would now &#8220;geoblock&#8221; users from generating &#8220;images of real people in bikinis, underwear and similar attire via the Grok account and in Grok in X in those jurisdictions where it&#8217;s illegal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It also said the image creation tool will only be available to paid subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have implemented technological measures to prevent the Grok account from allowing the editing of images of real people in revealing clothing such as bikinis,&#8221; the company said. &#8220;This restriction applies to all users, including paid subscribers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Elon Musk, who owns X and xAI, said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/2011432649353511350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">post<\/a>\u00a0that he is &#8220;not aware of naked underage images generated by Grok. Literally zero.&#8221; He also said the chatbot declines prompts to generate illegal images.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There may be times when adversarial hacking of Grok prompts does something unexpected. If that happens, we fix the bug immediately,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n<h2>Grok backlash\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Criticism of Grok escalated in early January after the generative-AI app enabled users to create images of minors wearing minimal clothing. In response to a user prompt, Grok acknowledged lapses in its digital safeguards.<\/p>\n<p>Copyleaks, a plagiarism and AI content-detection tool, told CBS News earlier this month that it had detected thousands of sexually explicit images created by Grok. In a December\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/copyleaks.com\/blog\/grok-and-nonconsensual-image-manipulation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">analysis<\/a>, the group estimated the chatbot was creating &#8220;roughly one nonconsensual sexualized image per minute.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), which seeks to eliminate child sexual abuse from the internet, has also raised concerns about Grok and other AI tools.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are extremely concerned about the ease and speed with which people can apparently generate photo-realistic child sexual abuse material.&#8221; Ngaire Alexander, head of hotline at IWF, told CBS News in a statement last week. &#8220;Tools like Grok now risk bringing sexual AI imagery of children into the mainstream.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>California opens probe<\/h2>\n<p>Grok is also attracting scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers and authorities overseas. On Wednesday, California Attorney General Rob Bonta\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/attorney-general-bonta-launches-investigation-xai-grok-over-undressed-sexual-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced<\/a> he was opening an investigation into the sexually explicit material produced using Grok.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The avalanche of reports detailing the non-consensual, sexually explicit material that xAI has produced and posted online in recent weeks is shocking,&#8221; Bonta said. &#8220;This material, which depicts women and children in nude and sexually explicit situations, has been used to harass people across the internet. I urge xAI to take immediate action to ensure this goes no further.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer last week raised the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/uk-x-elon-musk-grok-ai-sexualized-images-fake-nudes-starmer\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">possibility of banning X<\/a><\/span>, which uses Grok, in Britain over the AI tool&#8217;s generation of sexualized images of people without their consent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission is also monitoring the steps X is taking to prevent Grok from generating inappropriate images of children and women, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/media-telecom\/eu-will-carefully-assess-xs-promised-changes-grok-spokesperson-says-2026-01-14\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Reuters<\/a>
