The dark curve of the whale\u2019s back briefly emerged behind them, then sank out of sight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Simancas\u2019s father caught the whole thing on video.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI felt something hit me from behind \u2014 all this happened in a second \u2014 something dark blue or white enveloped me, and a slimy texture brushed my face,\u201d Mr. Simancas said in an interview on Thursday night. \u201cThen it closed completely and I started to sink, and I just closed my eyes, expecting an impact. But instead I felt as if I was surrounded by water. I realized that I was in something\u2019s mouth and I had been eaten.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After a second or so, he said, \u201cI began to feel the life jacket pulling me up and then suddenly I was out again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Simancas, 23, and his father, Dell, had been packrafting \u2014 they emphasized that they were using portable, inflatable craft and not kayaks \u2014 near the San Isidro Lighthouse and Bah\u00eda El \u00c1guila, a campground in Patagonia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dell Simancas, 49, said that he and his son, a computer engineering student, did many outdoor activities together, and that they had planned their trip months ago. The pair, who live in Chile, finally set out on their four-day trek and rafting trip last weekend, heading into the Strait of Magellan toward an island near Cape Froward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI turned the camera on to record the waves, and I heard a very loud sound behind me like a big wave breaking,\u201d Dell Simancas recalled. \u201cI turned around and couldn\u2019t see Adri\u00e1n or the boat anywhere. Suddenly I saw him emerge from the water along with what looked like an animal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He said that he felt a pang of fear as soon as his son vanished \u2014 and that his experience as an anaesthetist helped him keep his composure in the moments that followed. \u201cStay calm, stay calm,\u201d he can be heard saying after his son reappeared at the surface.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAt the time, I didn\u2019t know it was a whale,\u201d Adri\u00e1n Simancas said. \u201cI was able to stay calm thanks to my dad\u2019s advice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Such encounters between whales and humans are extraordinarily rare, scientists say, and although Mr. Simancas told The Associated Press he had been \u201cswallowed,\u201d humpbacks are filter feeders that cannot swallow anything as large as a person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat I see in the video suggests to me that the kayaker was just in the way of a surface-feeding whale,\u201d said Jooke Robbins, director of the Humpback Whale Studies Program at the Center for Coastal Studies, in Massachusetts. \u201cMy guess is that the whale was just as surprised\u201d as the rafter, she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Chile\u2019s Ministry of the Environment called the incident \u201cvery unusual,\u201d urging people to \u201cmaintain a prudent distance from marine life, especially whales, so as not to interfere with their behavior and also to minimize the risk of people suffering an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The country\u2019s fisheries service, Sernapesca, called for similar precautions,<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>warning that people could face fines for violating Chile\u2019s rules against coming too close to the animals, feeding them or otherwise disturbing them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe want to reinforce the safe observation distances to ensure respectful behavior toward the animals,\u201d said Soledad Tapia, the national director of the agency, adding that a case like the rafters\u2019 had never been observed in the Strait of Magellan region before. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Despite the improbability of Mr. Simancas\u2019s experience, he is not the first person to have landed in or near a humpback\u2019s mouth in recent years. In 2021, a lobsterman diving off the coast of Massachusetts was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/12\/us\/humpback-whale-lobster-diver-cape-cod.html\" title=\"\">caught in a humpback\u2019s mouth<\/a>, then was released, bruised, to the surface.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Last year, a humpback <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/24\/us\/whale-boat-capsize-new-hampshire.html\" title=\"\">capsized a 23-foot motorboat<\/a> off New Hampshire, sending two men into the water. And in 2020, a breaching humpback off California <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/11\/05\/us\/humpback-whale-kayakers.html\" title=\"\">lifted a kayak about six feet into the air<\/a>, along with the women inside it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">From the short video from Chile, \u201cit is difficult to tell what happened,\u201d said Dianna Schulte, a co-founder and director of research at the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation in Portsmouth, N.H. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHumpbacks often feed in the manner seen in the video, by charging to the surface with their mouth open to capture concentrated prey (small fish or krill),\u201d she wrote in an email. \u201cIt likely did not know the kayaker was above it, especially given the cloudy conditions and the assumed concentration of the prey.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She added that humpbacks, which lack biosonar or echolocation, rely primarily on their hearing, and small, motorless vessels like kayaks make very little sound, suggesting \u201cthe whale did not know it was there.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Adri\u00e1n Simancas, who had never seen a whale before last weekend, said he harbored no resentments. \u201cIf it happens again, I hope it isn\u2019t quite so close up,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\"
