{"id":62655,"date":"2026-01-01T03:01:39","date_gmt":"2026-01-01T03:01:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/chief-justice-roberts-says-constitution-remains-firm-and-unshaken\/"},"modified":"2026-01-01T03:01:39","modified_gmt":"2026-01-01T03:01:39","slug":"chief-justice-roberts-says-constitution-remains-firm-and-unshaken","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/chief-justice-roberts-says-constitution-remains-firm-and-unshaken\/","title":{"rendered":"Chief Justice Roberts says Constitution remains &#8220;firm and unshaken&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Chief Justice John Roberts said Wednesday that the Constitution remains a sturdy pillar for the country, a message that comes after a tumultuous year in the nation&#8217;s judicial system, with pivotal Supreme Court decisions on the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>Roberts said the nation&#8217;s founding documents remain &#8220;firm and unshaken,&#8221; a reference to a century-old <a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/declaration\/primary-sources\/speech-on-the-150th-anniversary-of-the-declaration-of-independence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">quote<\/a> from then-President Calvin Coolidge. &#8220;True then; true now,&#8221; Roberts wrote in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/publicinfo\/year-end\/2025year-endreport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">annual year-end letter<\/a> to the judiciary.<\/p>\n<p>The letter comes after a year in which legal scholars and Democrats raised fears of a possible constitutional crisis as President Trump and GOP supporters pushed back against rulings that slowed his far-reaching conservative agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Roberts weighed in at one point earlier this year, issuing <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/john-roberts-trump-judge-impeachment-chief-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">a rare rebuke<\/a><\/span> after Mr. Trump called for the impeachment of a judge who had ruled against him in a case over the deportation of Venezuelan migrants accused of being gang members.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision,&#8221; Roberts said in a March statement. &#8220;The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Roberts has spoken about the importance of judicial independence before. In his year-end report to close out 2024, he highlighted four areas that he said threatened the independence of judges: violence, intimidation, disinformation and threats to defy lawfully entered judgments.<\/p>\n<p>The chief justice&#8217;s Wednesday letter was largely focused on the nation&#8217;s history, including an early 19th-century case establishing the principle that Congress shouldn&#8217;t remove judges over contentious rulings.<\/p>\n<p>While the Trump administration faced pushback in the lower courts, it has scored a series of some two dozen wins on the Supreme Court&#8217;s <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/supreme-court-emergency-docket-trump-appeals\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">emergency docket<\/a><\/span>. The court&#8217;s conservative majority has allowed the administration to move ahead for now with <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/supreme-court-trump-transgender-military-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">barring transgender people from the military<\/a><\/span>, clawing back billions of dollars of congressionally approved federal spending, moving aggressively on immigration and firing the Senate-confirmed leaders of independent federal agencies.<\/p>\n<p>The court also handed Mr. Trump a few defeats over the last year, including in his push to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-supreme-court-national-guard-chicago\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">deploy the National Guard<\/a><\/span> to U.S. cities.<\/p>\n<p>Other pivotal issues are ahead for the high court in 2026, including arguments over Mr. Trump&#8217;s <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/supreme-court-trump-birthright-citizenship\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">push to end birthright citizenship<\/a><\/span> and a ruling on whether he can <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/supreme-court-trump-tariffs-arguments\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">unilaterally impose tariffs<\/a><\/span> on hundreds of countries.<\/p>\n<p>Roberts&#8217; letter contained few references to those issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It opened with a history of the seminal 1776 pamphlet &#8220;Common Sense,&#8221; written by Thomas Paine \u2014 a &#8220;recent immigrant to Britain&#8217;s North American colonies,&#8221; Roberts noted \u2014 and closed with Coolidge&#8217;s encouragement to &#8220;turn for solace&#8221; to the Constitution and Declaration of Independence &#8220;amid all the welter of partisan politics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<section
