Richard Blumenthal, the ranking member on the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio Thursday night demanding answers and documents relating to the State Department&#8217;s possible purchase of $400 million worth of armored Tesla Cybertrucks from the company run by Elon Musk.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mr. Musk&#8217;s dual roles pose conflicts of interest so obvious that they hardly require explanation,&#8221; the Connecticut Democrat wrote in the letter obtained by CBS News. &#8220;The State Department&#8217;s intent to purchase armored Cybertrucks suggests the conflicts of interest inherent in Mr. Musk&#8217;s installation of his cronies throughout the government are not being adequately managed and, in fact, are increasing by the minute.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the 15 months since it was released, the Cybertruck has been widely derided and subject to at least <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/tesla-recall-cybertruck-rearview-camera-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">six separate recalls<\/a><\/span>. Indeed, Tesla has reportedly had &#8220;disastrous&#8221; sales numbers for the Cybertruck. It hardly seems like the type of reliable vehicle the State Department would choose for this contract absent a heavy thumb on the scale.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Blumenthal asked for a response by Feb 21.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, he opened a preliminary inquiry into Musk and his companies.<\/p>\n<p>Musk, the world&#8217;s wealthiest person, who is also CEO of SpaceX and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/elon-musk-trump-social-media-election-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">X<\/a><\/span> (formerly Twitter), has enormous government contracts and was a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/elon-musk-277-million-trump-republican-candidates-donations\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">huge contributor<\/a><\/span> to Mr. Trump&#8217;s campaign.<\/p>\n<p>He heads the newly-created Department of Government Efficiency, or <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-doge-elon-musk-findings-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">DOGE<\/a><\/span>, which, while not an official government agency, is <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/musk-us-delete-entire-agencies-at-home-mind-own-business-abroad\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">aggressively pursuing<\/a><\/span> ways to cut the federal budget.<\/p>\n<p>Musk&#8217;s team has gone <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/new-york-and-18-states-sue-trump-doge-access-privacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">into computer systems<\/a><\/span> in <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/judge-orders-hhs-cdc-fda-restore-deleted-webpages-health-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">numerous agencies<\/a><\/span> looking for what he calls waste, fraud and abuse. Numerous <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/elon-musk-doge-lawsuit-january-20-trump-inauguration\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">lawsuits have been filed<\/a><\/span>\u00a0challenging his authority to do that.<\/p>\n<p>In October, GM Defense completed its first Suburban Shield \u2014 a heavy-duty armored version of the suburban for the State Department&#8217;s Diplomatic Security Service (DSS). The program is intended to provide armored SUVs to DSS and more than a dozen other federal agencies, according to GM Defense.
