Analysts had expected the October data might be weak, due to federal deferred resignation buyout offers, according to FactSet.<\/p>\n<p>Job growth for August and September was also revised down by a collective 33,000.<\/p>\n<p>The government&#8217;s official employment data for October and November had been delayed due to the 43-day <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/feature\/government-shutdown\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">government shutdown<\/a>, which <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/how-the-longest-government-shutdown-in-history-came-to-an-end\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">ended in last month<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>In the absence of federal data, economists at the Federal Reserve and on Wall Street had been monitoring alternative sources, which have signaled ongoing headwinds in the labor market. For instance, ADP earlier this month said private-sector employers in the U.S. <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/adp-jobs-private-sector-lost-32000-november-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">cut 32,000 jobs in November<\/a><\/span>, while outplacement firm Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas has tracked more than <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/employers-cut-1-1-million-jobs-2025-why-layoffs-rising\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">1.1 million layoffs <\/a><\/span>so far this year.<\/p>\n<p>Economic uncertainty has led workers to stay put and employers to pull back on hiring, creating a difficult situation for job seekers, especially those <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/gen-z-struggle-get-hired-labor-market\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">early in their careers<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The labor market is slowly cooling, Federal Reserve Bank of New York president John C. Williams said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/newsevents\/speeches\/2025\/wil251215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">speech<\/a>\u00a0Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I should emphasize that this has been an ongoing, gradual process, without signs of a sharp rise in layoffs or other indications of rapid deterioration,&#8221; Williams said.
