All current SAVE borrowers will have a &#8220;limited time&#8221; to enroll in a new plan and begin repayments, according to the department&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/news\/press-release\/us-department-of-education-announces-agreement-missouri-end-biden-administrations-illegal-save-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">notice<\/a><strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/09\/save-student-loan-payment-pause.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CNBC<\/a> that borrowers may need to leave SAVE forbearance early next year. That&#8217;s a quicker timeline than what was laid out in The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, passed in July.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That law gave borrowers enrolled in SAVE and other soon-to-be-phased-out repayment programs <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/big-beautiful-bill-changes-student-loan-repayment\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">until July 1, 2028<\/a><\/span>, to move to a new plan.<\/p>\n<p>Under Secretary of Education Nicholas Kent said in Tuesday&#8217;s announcement that the Biden Administration&#8217;s policies unfairly shifted student loan debt onto American taxpayers. The Education Department estimates the SAVE program would have cost taxpayers more than $342 billion over ten years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bidenwhitehouse.archives.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/08\/22\/fact-sheet-the-biden-harris-administration-launches-the-save-plan-the-most-affordable-student-loan-repayment-plan-ever-to-lower-monthly-payments-for-millions-of-borrowers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced<\/a>\u00a0the SAVE program in 2023, calling it the &#8220;most affordable student loan repayment plan ever.&#8221; The plan allowed 4.6 million of the program&#8217;s more than 7 million enrollees to lower their monthly bills to $0 per month,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/protectborrowers.org\/billionaire-ed-sec-and-right-wing-ag-abandon-borrowers-in-backroom-deal-on-save\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according<\/a>\u00a0to Protect Borrowers, an advocacy group<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday&#8217;s announcement is the latest development in a months-long legal battle over the program&#8217;s fate, which has left millions of SAVE borrowers in limbo.<\/p>\n<p>The SAVE plan received pushback from attorneys general from several Republican-led states, including Missouri, which sued in 2024, arguing the plan overstepped the Biden administration&#8217;s authority. In February 2025, a circuit court ruled the SAVE plan was unlawful, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/news\/press-release\/us-department-of-education-continues-improve-federal-student-loan-repayment-options-addresses-illegal-biden-administration-actions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according<\/a> to the Education Department.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the legal battle played out, SAVE borrowers were put in forbearance in July 2024, meaning that their loans were temporarily placed on hold and interest stopped accruing.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2025, the Education Department said it would restart <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/student-loan-interest-resumes-august-1-forbearance-save-300-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">charging interest on the loans<\/a><\/span> beginning Aug. 1, a move advocacy group Protect Borrowers said could cost enrollees $300 per month due to new interest charges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday&#8217;s agreement will &#8220;strip borrowers of the most affordable repayment plan,&#8221; Protect Borrowers deputy executive director and managing counsel Persis Yu said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/protectborrowers.org\/billionaire-ed-sec-and-right-wing-ag-abandon-borrowers-in-backroom-deal-on-save\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Education Department is advising SAVE borrowers to use the Federal Student Aid<a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/loan-simulator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> Loan Simulator
