Harry S. Truman, a Nimitz-class carrier, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.centcom.mil\/MEDIA\/STATEMENTS\/Statements-View\/Article\/4026777\/uscentcom-commander-visits-uss-harry-s-truman-carrier-strike-group\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">had been operating in the Red Sea<\/a> while deployed under U.S. Central Command since Dec. 14, helping to launch attacks in Yemen against Houthi militias there that have been attacking civilian ships and vessels tied to Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There were no reports of flooding or injuries aboard the Truman, and the Navy said in a statement on Thursday that the ship\u2019s propulsion systems, powered by two onboard nuclear reactors, were \u201cunaffected and in a safe and stable condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Navy also said the crash was under investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The online ship tracking service Vessel Tracker reported that there were no injuries to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vesseltracker.com\/en\/Ships\/Besiktas-m-9291365.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the crew of the commercial<\/a> vessel, the Besiktas-M, a bulk carrier built in 2003 and sailing under the Panamanian flag. The ship was traveling from the port of Aqaba in Jordan to Constanta, a port city in Romania by the Black Sea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The collision near Port Said in Egypt breaks an apparent safety streak for the U.S. Navy when it comes to crashes with commercial ships. Before the Truman\u2019s collision, the most notable recent ones had happened in 2017, and they led to an internal reckoning. Two such collisions in the Western Pacific killed 17 sailors that year. Navy investigations found they <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/11\/01\/us\/politics\/navy-collisions-avoidable.html\" title=\"\">had been \u201cavoidable<\/a>,\u201d resulting from crew errors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Those crashes led to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/21\/world\/asia\/navy-ship-mccain-search-sailors.html\" title=\"\">a safety stand-down of all Navy ships<\/a>, and the commander of the Seventh Fleet in Japan, which oversees Navy operations between the Indian Ocean and the international date line, was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/22\/world\/asia\/us-navy-ship-collision-uss-mccain-search-sailors.html\" title=\"\">relieved of duty<\/a>. The Navy\u2019s Pacific Fleet commander <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/09\/27\/us\/politics\/navy-orders-safety-operational-standards.html\" title=\"\">chose to retire after the two collisions<\/a>, when he was told he was no longer in line for a promotion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On June 17 that year, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2017\/06\/18\/world\/asia\/path-ship-hit-uss-fitzgerald.html\" title=\"\">U.S.S. Fitzgerald struck the ACX Crystal<\/a>, a 30,000-ton container ship off the coast of Japan, ripping a hole in the destroyer\u2019s hull. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/06\/18\/world\/asia\/navy-uss-fitzgerald-japan.html\" title=\"\">Seven U.S. sailors died<\/a>, and the warship\u2019s commander and executive officer <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/17\/world\/asia\/fitzgerald-collision-investigation.html\" title=\"\">were both fired<\/a> after an investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A little more than two months later, a second destroyer, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/20\/world\/asia\/uss-john-mccain-collision-merchant-ship.html\" title=\"\">the U.S.S. John S. McCain, struck the Alnic MC<\/a>, a 600-foot oil tanker, off the coast of Singapore, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/24\/world\/asia\/mccain-collision-destroyer-united-states-navy.html\" title=\"\">punching through the warship\u2019s hull<\/a>. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/27\/world\/asia\/bodies-sailors-uss-john-mccain-found.html\" title=\"\">Ten Navy sailors died<\/a> when their living quarters were flooded with seawater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">By historical standards, the Navy\u2019s record in recent decades has been \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/about-us\/leadership\/director\/directors-corner\/h-grams\/h-gram-075\/h-075-2.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">extraordinarily good,<\/a>\u201d according to a 2022 report written by Samuel J. Cox, a retired admiral who leads the Navy\u2019s History and Heritage Command.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And fatal collisions for Navy warships have been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/21\/us\/navy-collisions-history-mccain-fitzgerald.html\" title=\"\">relatively rare<\/a>. In 2004, the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy, an aircraft carrier of an earlier design than the Truman, collided in the Persian Gulf with a small traditional Arab sailing boat used mainly for transportation and fishing. The boat sank immediately, and all aboard are believed to have died. Two warplanes on the Kennedy were damaged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The U.S.S. Greeneville, a Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2001\/02\/21\/national\/submarine-made-sonar-contact-with-boat-before-collision.html\" title=\"\">collided with a Japanese fishing boat<\/a>, the Ehime Maru, off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii, in 2001, killing nine passengers on the fishing boat, including four high school students.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Truman has nine aviation squadrons embarked and has been accompanied by a cruiser and two destroyers. Together, the Truman Strike Group has recently launched attacks on the Iran-backed Houthi militias, according to Central Command. The U.S. military has carried out a series of strikes on the Houthis, who on Thursday suggested they would continue attacking Israel and ships in the Red Sea if the cease-fire in Gaza fell apart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The collision on Wednesday was the second-known major mishap of the Truman\u2019s current deployment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Dec. 22, an F\/A-18 Hornet fighter flying from the Truman <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/22\/us\/us-fighter-jet-red-sea.html\" title=\"\">was mistakenly shot down<\/a> by the U.S.S.
