China is the largest importer of U.S. soybeans, purchasing more than half of all American exports of the crop in the last five years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iowafarmbureau.com\/Article\/World-Soybean-Trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according<\/a> to the Iowa Farm Bureau, a farmer advocacy organization.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping struck a preliminary\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/heres-what-trump-says-he-and-xi-agreed-to-in-their-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">trade agreement<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in October, which the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/11\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-strikes-deal-on-economic-and-trade-relations-with-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> involved the resumption of U.S. soybean sales to China. The White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/11\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-strikes-deal-on-economic-and-trade-relations-with-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0in November that China would purchase at least 12 million metric tons of soybeans in the last two months of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>However, Chinese imports of U.S. soybeans could fall short of what the country normally purchases, CBS News correspondent Lana Zak\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/farmer-aid-package-could-be-announced-2-weeks-usda-head\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">reported in November<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The trade war with China dealt a double whammy to U.S farmers, who were already facing high input costs and weak profit margins. Farmers recently\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/for-some-us-soybean-farmers-china-trade-deal-may-not-be-enough-to-save-farm-60-minutes-transcript\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">told 60 Minutes<\/a><\/span>\u00a0they are suffering major losses on corn, soybeans and cotton. Prices of the crops have fallen in the last two years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fb.org\/market-intel\/declining-farm-economy-continues-to-pressure-profitability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according<\/a> to data from the American Farm Bureau Federation, an advocacy organization.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bessent said on Face the Nation on Sunday that domestic soybean prices have risen as much as 15% since the agreement with the Chinese.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration started considering\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-administration-aid-package-soybean-farmers\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">a financial aid package for farmers<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in October, with sources telling CBS News that it could include more than $10 billion in relief. However, that proposal was put on hold due to the 43-day U.S.\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/how-the-longest-government-shutdown-in-history-came-to-an-end\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">government shutdown<\/a><\/span>, which ended in mid-November.<\/p>\n<section class=\"content__body--footer\">\n<p
