He also served as the agency&#8217;s top ethics official.<\/p>\n<p>An email circulated among NIH staff from Tabak did not explain why he was abruptly stepping down, which multiple people familiar with the decision said came earlier than he was planning. One person said he did not plan to retire until at least the fall.<\/p>\n<p>Tabak told one federal researcher that he said he &#8220;found it necessary to retire today from federal service.&#8221; A former colleague said Tabak, who should have been the second-in-command at the agency, had been excluded from key meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Tabak and spokespeople for the National Institutes of Health did not immediately return requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He has helped shape important policy decisions at NIH over four administrations. It also faulted the NIH for not doing more to ensure its funds did not go towards gain-of-function research.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tabak&#8217;s retirement also comes amid ongoing court battles over a decision last week to make <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/nih-federal-cuts-medical-research-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">steep cuts<\/a><\/span> to the amount of money for facilities and administration costs that the federal government has agreed to pay for in medical research.<\/p>\n<p>A federal judge has for now temporarily blocked those cuts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/news\/press-releases\/aamc-lawsuit-results-nationwide-temporary-restraining-order-proposed-drastic-cuts-nih-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nationwide<\/a>, pending further arguments in lawsuits brought by medical colleges, universities and state attorneys general.<\/p>\n<p>Several scientists have come out to praise Tabak, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/jeremymberg.bsky.social\/post\/3lhyannj5h22w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">often tasked<\/a> as the agency&#8217;s principal deputy director to handle difficult problems at the NIH.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Larry was brilliant at deflecting credit away from himself in order to raise up colleagues, mentees, and those who might otherwise have lacked a voice,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7295498611897843712\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">posted<\/a> Carrie Wolinetz, a former senior adviser to the NIH director.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his administrative duties, Tabak also continued to lead a team within the NIH publishing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcr.nih.gov\/research\/conducted-at-nidcr\/investigators\/lawrence-tabak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">biochemistry research<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jordan Lara, a research fellow in Tabak&#8217;s lab at the NIH, praised him for having &#8220;always made time&#8221; for mentorship and scientific research.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He would work 80 hours a week regularly with no days off.
