All of the confirmed measles cases in the county involve unvaccinated residents, and nine patients have been hospitalized.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is troubling, because this was completely preventable,&#8221; Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease physician and senior scholar at Johns Hopkins, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/measles-outbreak-expands-in-west-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">told CBS News<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday. &#8220;What we&#8217;re seeing is, one of the places in Texas \u2014 it has the lowest vaccination rates, the highest school exemption rates from measles vaccination \u2014 having a measles outbreak, including hospitalizations of individuals who&#8217;ve been infected with measles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Adalja said this should act as a reminder that measles is still a risk when proper precautions aren&#8217;t taken.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the most contagious infectious disease known to humans. And when we start to see measles outbreak, that&#8217;s a sign that there is a chink in the armor of vaccination and the fact that it&#8217;s preventable, I think, is what people should understand. This doesn&#8217;t have to happen if we can get vaccination rates back to high levels again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Measles vaccine<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;If somebody is fully vaccinated against measles and has a normal immune system, they don&#8217;t need to worry about measles,&#8221; said Adalja. &#8220;You&#8217;re not going to be at risk for contracting measles because the vaccine the vaccine is very, very effective.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One dose of the MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella, is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8189124\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">93% effective<\/a>\u00a0against measles and the recommended two doses is 97% effective, research shows.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17541639\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Studies have shown<\/a>\u00a0the MMR vaccine, which was first introduced in 1971, may be given safely and effectively in combination with other vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s those individuals who are not vaccinated, or maybe they&#8217;re too young to be vaccinated, or the parents who chose not to get them vaccinated,&#8221; Adalja said.<\/p>\n<h2>Risk of vaccination rate decline<\/h2>\n<p>Nationwide, at least 10 states have seen\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/kindergarten-routine-vaccination-rates-fell-for-second-straight-year-cdc-warns\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">vaccination rates<\/a><\/span>\u00a0fall, jeopardizing the country&#8217;s\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreaks-vaccination-rate-herd-immunity\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">herd immunity<\/a><\/span>\u00a0from widespread outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>Like Texas, some Florida schools \u2014 such as an elementary school in Broward County last year \u2014 have\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-spread-states-trips-to-florida\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">seen measles outbreaks<\/a><\/span>. The vaccination rate for Florida kindergartners has fallen to 88.1%, according to the CDC, the lowest in decades.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Jeffrey Goldhagen, a pediatrician and professor at the University of Florida,\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/vaccination-rate-decline-measles-polio-outbreaks\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">recently told CBS News<\/a><\/span>, &#8220;90% is nowhere near good enough. That coverage rate will allow for the spread of\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/how-many-lives-vaccines-have-saved\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">vaccine-preventable diseases<\/a><\/span>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said if vaccination rates continue to dip, the U.S. could see &#8220;increased numbers of children infected. It means epidemics of measles.
