{"id":57438,"date":"2025-11-20T19:42:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-20T19:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/tsa-may-start-charging-a-fee-for-travelers-without-a-real-id-or-other-approved-id\/"},"modified":"2025-11-20T19:42:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T19:42:07","slug":"tsa-may-start-charging-a-fee-for-travelers-without-a-real-id-or-other-approved-id","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/tsa-may-start-charging-a-fee-for-travelers-without-a-real-id-or-other-approved-id\/","title":{"rendered":"TSA may start charging a fee for travelers without a Real ID or other approved ID"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>If you\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/real-id-what-is-it-how-to-get-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">don&#8217;t have a Real ID<\/a><\/span>\u00a0the next time you go to the airport, it could cost you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Transportation Security Administration has proposed a rule that would charge travelers who lack a Real ID an $18 fee at security checkpoints, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/FR-2025-11-20\/pdf\/2025-20474.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">notice<\/a> published Thursday in the Federal Register.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This notice serves as a next step in the process in REAL ID compliance, which was signed into law more than 20 years ago and finally implemented by Secretary Noem as of May 2025,&#8221; a TSA spokesperson told CBS News, noting that the agency would soon provide additional guidance. &#8220;TSA is working with stakeholders and partners to ensure both security and efficiency at our checkpoints.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Embracing biometrics<\/h2>\n<p>The TSA is launching a biometric identity verification program at its checkpoints to screen individuals who don&#8217;t have a Real ID or other suitable alternative form of identification, such as a passport.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Alternative ID verification methods are &#8220;time and resource intensive,&#8221; the TSA said in proposing the fee.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To address the government-incurred costs, individuals who choose to use TSA&#8217;s modernized alternative identity verification program will be required to pay an $18 fee,&#8221; the agency&#8217;s proposed rule states.<\/p>\n<p>Verifying people&#8217;s identity at the nation&#8217;s airports &#8220;is the first step in the physical screening process at a TSA security checkpoint and the last link in intelligence-based traveler prescreening, ensuring that high-risk travelers are identified. &#8230;&#8221; the proposal states.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The TSA said that biometric verification, which it also refers to as a registered traveler program, will streamline the process of identifying passengers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Passengers will start incurring the $18 fee when the TSA announces that individuals may register for the alternative identity verification program at TSA.gov.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Green, co-founder of Faye Travel Insurance, thinks the fee proposal is reasonable, given that travelers have had ample time to obtain a Real ID.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For years, they&#8217;ve been saying either get a Real ID or a passport or don&#8217;t travel,&#8221; he told CBS News. &#8220;So the idea that you can pay $18 and potentially travel anyway isn&#8217;t so unreasonable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The TSA began requiring passengers to\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/real-id-deadline-may-7-tsa\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">present a Real ID<\/a><\/span> or other approved documents in May. The enhanced form of identification can either be a driver&#8217;s license, learner&#8217;s permit or nondriver ID card.<\/p>\n<section class=\"content__body--footer\">\n<p
