Films span a wide range of topics: immigration, family histories, dating, gun rights, the arts, cryptocurrency, the environment, fighting for the American Dream, and more. Subjects include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump litigant E. Jean Carroll, actors Oscar Isaac and Alec Baldwin, Julian Assange, and Elon Musk&#8217;s Space X. There&#8217;s even an inside look at the industry of selling Christmas trees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The festival also hosts the DOC NYC Pro Conference, examining storytelling, filmmaking techniques, funding, distribution and publicity.<\/p>\n<h2>Gala presentations<\/h2>\n<p>Wednesday&#8217;s opening night film is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docnyc.net\/film\/whistle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;Whistle,&#8221;<\/a> which is set in one of the quirkiest of public competitions: the Masters of Musical Whistling festival in Hollywood. The closing night film is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docnyc.net\/film\/ask-e-jean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;Ask E. Jean,&#8221;<\/a> a portrait of the writer and talk show host E. Jean Carroll, whose <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-e-jean-carroll-appeals-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">lawsuits<\/a><\/span> against Donald Trump led to one of the most highly-charged outcomes of the #MeToo movement.<\/p>\n<p>The centerpiece films are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docnyc.net\/film\/the-merchants-of-joy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;The Merchants of Joy,&#8221;<\/a> a\u00a0look at the competition that arises among sellers of Christmas trees on New York street corners; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docnyc.net\/film\/steal-this-story-please\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;Steal This Story, Please!,&#8221;<\/a> about the indefatigable independent journalist Amy Goodman, host of &#8220;Democracy Now!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other special presentations include Rory Kennedy&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docnyc.net\/film\/the-trial-of-alec-baldwin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;The Trial of Alec Baldwin,&#8221;<\/a> about the prosecution of the actor over the on-set shooting death of &#8220;Rust&#8221; cinematographer Halyna Hutchins; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docnyc.net\/film\/benita\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;Benita&#8221;<\/a>, a tribute to experimental documentary filmmaker Benita Raphan, who died by suicide during the pandemic lockdown; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docnyc.net\/film\/black-is-beautiful-the-kwame-brathwaite-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;Black Is Beautiful: The Kwame Brathwaite Story,&#8221;<\/a> which honors the photographer, artist and activist.<\/p>\n<p>The social history of the Jewish community in the resorts of New York&#8217;s Catskills is remembered in the nostalgic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docnyc.net\/film\/we-met-at-grossingers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;We Met at Grossinger&#8217;s.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Check out more of the featured offerings below.<\/p>\n<p>Screenings will be held at the IFC Center, SVA Theatre, and Village East by Angelika cinemas in Manhattan. Tammy Duckworth, Kumail Nanjiani, Amanda Nguyen, Sandra Oh, and others reflect on identity in America amid rising racism.
