John Fetterman told CBS News the &#8220;mass chaos&#8221; wrought by the longest government shutdown in modern U.S. history pushed more Senate Democrats to the table.<\/p>\n<p>The Pennsylvania senator was one of <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/senate-democrats-vote-end-government-shutdown\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">eight members of the Democratic caucus<\/a><\/span> who voted late Sunday to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/government-shutdown-senate-deal\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">move forward<\/a><\/span> on a bill that would fund the government until at least late January. In exchange, Senate GOP leadership promised to hold a vote by next month on extending a slate of health insurance tax credits that are set to expire, among other concessions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to find a way forward because I strongly, strongly support those tax credits to make health care more affordable,&#8221; Fetterman said in an interview with &#8220;CBS Mornings&#8221; that&#8217;s set to air Wednesday. &#8220;But I just refuse to shut our government down and hold our government hostage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Senate still needs to vote on final passage and the House needs to approve the bill before the government can reopen, which could take a few days.<\/p>\n<p>Most Democrats voted against the deal, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.<\/p>\n<p>But Fetterman said Senate Democrats had realized &#8220;collectively&#8221; that the shutdown &#8220;has to end.&#8221; He pointed to severe <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/canceled-flights-us-airlines-faa-order\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">disruptions to air travel<\/a><\/span>, uncertainty about the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-administration-states-undo-steps-full-snap-benefits\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program<\/a><\/span>, or SNAP, and missed paychecks for many government employees.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think enough people collectively agreed \u2026 we would find eight people overall to do that,&#8221; Fetterman said.<\/p>\n<p>Some high-profile Democrats have <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/government-shutdown-deal-senate-democrats-health-care\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">accused Fetterman and others of caving<\/a><\/span> since Republicans didn&#8217;t make any concrete promises to extend the health insurance subsidies at issue, a longstanding demand for Democratic leadership.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fetterman \u2014 who had consistently voted in favor of a House GOP-backed bill to keep the government open with no strings attached \u2014 rejected that premise, saying, &#8220;I refuse to gamble with the food insecurity of 42 million Americans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He accused critics of the deal of using their opposition as a campaign fundraising pitch.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many of the ones now that are railing at it jumped on fundraising emails,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I refuse to monetize the outrage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The senator said he&#8217;s hopeful that the health insurance subsidies will be extended, but &#8220;we have to negotiate with the Republicans because America decided to put us in the minority.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s the essence of democracy: To find a way forward because our parties have different priorities,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And that&#8217;s why I&#8217;ve always refused to put our government in the middle of all of it, because millions and millions of American lives will be impacted that way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<section class=\"content__body--footer\">\n<\/section>\n<p>  <!-- data-recirc-source=\"queryly\" --><\/p>\n<aside class=\"component list recirculation component--type-recirculation \">\n<p><h3 class=\"component__title\">More from CBS News<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<section class=\"content__body--footer\">\n      <!-- tags --><br \/>\n    <\/section>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fetterman-government-shutdown-deal-healthcare-tax-credits-wont-hold-government-hostage\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hours after voting to advance a deal to reopen the government, Democratic Sen.
