President Trump in August <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/115092243259973570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">threatened higher tariffs<\/a> on countries with tech rules he believes are discriminatory to U.S. companies. In an April op-ed, Mr. Trump&#8217;s trade adviser Peter Navarro <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/f313eea9-bd4f-4866-8123-a850938163be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">accused the EU<\/a> of engaging in &#8220;lawfare&#8221; to &#8220;target America&#8217;s largest tech firms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, the EU passed two major laws governing online platforms. The Digital Services Act <a href=\"https:\/\/digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu\/en\/factpages\/safer-fairer-online-environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">requires platforms<\/a> to follow certain rules on illegal or harmful content and advertising to minors, and the Digital Markets Act is designed to <a href=\"https:\/\/digital-markets-act.ec.europa.eu\/about-dma_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">promote online competition<\/a>. Tech companies can face hefty fines for violating either law.<\/p>\n<p>Apple was <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_25_1085\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">fined 500 million euros<\/a> in April for violating the EU&#8217;s Digital Markets Act by allegedly restricting app developers from steering users toward alternatives to the App Store. Apple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cpvjdm4mp92o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">appealed the fine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the company has become more outspoken in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2025\/09\/the-digital-markets-acts-impacts-on-eu-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">claiming<\/a> the EU rules have opened the door to financial scams, pornography, privacy issues, and other problems.<\/p>\n<p>In its new letter, Apple says the European Commission sent an inquiry in October that questioned whether the tech company had put in place measures to ensure a high level of safety for minors, under the Digital Services Act.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Apple fired back that the EU&#8217;s other major law \u2014 the Digital Markets Act \u2014 required it to allow developers to link out of their apps to websites and other apps &#8220;with no meaningful guardrails.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This exposes users to fraud and scams on those third-party platforms that we cannot control or even monitor\u2014even for apps distributed through the App Store,&#8221; the letter says.<\/p>\n<p>It continues: &#8220;Apple has repeatedly warned the Commission that its approach to enforcement of the DMA is reckless and even dangerous, and urged the Commission to address the new risks their approach to the DMA has created for consumers,&#8221; referring to the acronym for the Digital Markets Act.<\/p>\n<p>The European Commission could not immediately be reached for comment.<\/p>\n<p>American tech giants like Apple, Meta and Google have faced scrutiny on both sides of the Atlantic, with regulators accusing them of stifling competition.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the fines in Europe, U.S. officials <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/apple-antitrust-lawsuit-justice-department-iphone-apple-watch-imessage\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">sued Apple last year<\/a><\/span>, alleging the company has violated federal antitrust laws by imposing &#8220;shapeshifting rules and restrictions in its App Store guidelines.&#8221; And Apple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/transactional\/apple-asks-us-appeals-court-lift-app-store-restrictions-epic-games-case-2025-10-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">has been<\/a> <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/fortnite-epic-games-sues-apple-google-app-store-removal-2020-08-13\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">embroiled in a<\/a><\/span> <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/apple-fortnite-blocked-apple-ios\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">long-running dispute<\/a><\/span> with Epic Games, the maker of popular video game Fortnite, over App Store fees and policies.<\/p>\n<p>Apple has <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/epic-games-apple-fortnite-trial-tim-cook\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">long argued<\/a><\/span> that its App Store restrictions are necessary to protect users from privacy, viruses and scams, and the EU&#8217;s new rules <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2025\/09\/the-digital-markets-acts-impacts-on-eu-users\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">could expose users to security
