Arteriosclerosis is a disease that causes abnormal thickening of the artery walls.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurology.org\/doi\/10.1212\/WN9.0000000000000036\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">another study<\/a> led by Sen and published in the same journal Wednesday, researchers found having both gum disease and cavities is linked to an 86% increased risk of stroke compared to people with healthy mouths. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What the study suggested was that if you have cavities on top of gum disease, it is double trouble. It means your risk of stroke or adverse heart event doubles,&#8221; Sen said.<\/p>\n<p>But, if someone takes care of their mouth \u2014 including brushing, flossing and regular dentist visits for preventative cleaning \u2014 risk decreases.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their risk of having a stroke dropped by as much as 81%, which is a very big finding,&#8221; Sen said of the research.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The research just shows an association, so it does not prove that poor oral health causes strokes \u2014 but these findings add to growing evidence that oral health may have a significant impact on cardiovascular health.<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/18-11-2022-who-highlights-oral-health-neglect-affecting-nearly-half-of-the-world-s-population\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">3.5 billion people<\/a> worldwide suffering from gum disease or cavities, according to the World Health Organization, researchers say prevention and treatment could be an important part of stroke prevention.
