NABE also expects the economy to expand at a faster pace in 2026, at 1.7%, higher than its June forecast of 1.4%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The report is the latest signal that economic growth continues to hold up despite <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cpi-report-today-august-2025-tariffs-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">rising inflation<\/a><\/span> and a recent slowdown in the labor market. After\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/gdp-report-first-quarter-2025-declined-commerce-department\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">economic activity shrank<\/a><\/span> in the first three months of 2025, growth has accelerated over the rest of the year, EY-Parthenon chief economist Gregory Daco, vice president of NABE, told CBS News. The outlook for business investment in particular has improved, he noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The economy could get a further boost this year from the Federal Reserve. NABE expects Fed officials, who trimmed their <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/federal-reserve-interest-rate-cut-september-2025-rates-loans-mortgages\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">benchmark rate in September<\/a><\/span> for the first time since 2024, to lower borrowing costs by another quarter of a percentage point by year-end and by a total of three-quarters of percentage point in 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Pain points remain<\/h2>\n<p>While the economy has performed better than many experts predicted earlier this year, there are still signs of weakness. Government data indicates that job growth has deteriorated since the first half of the year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As hiring cools, meanwhile, the percentage of long-term job seekers \u2014 people unemployed for 27 weeks or longer \u2014 has risen to 26% of the total unemployed population, the highest in more than three years, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/employment-job-market-surge-in-long-term-unemployed-workers-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">labor data shows.<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/layoffs-2025-highest-level-since-2020-labor-market-jobs-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Layoffs are also climbing<\/a><\/span>. Through September, employers this year have cut nearly 950,000 jobs, the largest number of layoffs since 2020, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"min-height:452px\" id=\"datawrapper-vis-M4Hl6\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/M4Hl6\/full.png\" alt=\"A surge in long-term job seekers (Line chart)\"\/><\/div>\n<p><amp-iframe width=\"100\" height=\"100\" layout=\"responsive\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin\" resizable=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/M4Hl6\/3\/\"> <\/amp-iframe><\/div>\n<p>Looking ahead, NABE expects the job market to remain fragile. Economists predict average monthly payroll gains of 60,000 for the rest the year, down from the 87,000 the group forecasted in June. From January to August, employers added an average of around 75,000 jobs per month, according to government <a href=\"https:\/\/data.bls.gov\/timeseries\/CES0000000001?output_view=net_1mth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">data<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>NABE projects that the nation&#8217;s unemployment rate,\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cpi-report-today-august-2025-tariffs-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">4.3 % as of August<\/a><\/span>, will rise to 4.5% in 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"min-height:489px\" id=\"datawrapper-vis-XlGvQ\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/XlGvQ\/full.png\" alt=\"Bar chart showing the monthly change in U.S. nonfarm payroll employment from 2022 to 2025.\"\/><\/div>\n<p><amp-iframe width=\"100\" height=\"100\" layout=\"responsive\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin\" resizable=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/XlGvQ\/25\/\"> <\/amp-iframe><\/div>\n<p>Another lingering pain point for the economy is inflation, which remains above the Fed&#8217;s 2% annual target. NABE expects inflation as measured by the Personal Consumption Expenditure index \u2014 the Fed&#8217;s preferred measure of inflation \u2014 to rise at an annualized rate of 3% over the rest of 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nearly all of those surveyed \u2014 95% \u2014 expect U.S. tariffs to drive up consumer prices over the rest of the year, according to NABE, although the group now expects stepped-up duties on imports to have less of an inflationary impact than it previously predicted. As a result, inflation is projected to cool to 2.5% by the end of 2026, according to the panel of economists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A recession is unlikely, according to NABE. Most of the economists polled by the group put the odds of a slump in the next 12 months at between 20% and less than 40%.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async
