It tells of a single missile launched from an unknown location in the Pacific. At first it looks like a test, but it keeps on coming \u2013 with a trajectory estimated to be the continental United States.  <\/p>\n<p>With 19 minutes to impact, the president (played by Idris Elba) has to make an impossible decision. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-left embed--size-small\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2025\/10\/11\/9c709548-0ab0-443c-82d5-7ab34506455e\/thumbnail\/620x465\/f22a65c8c83c2503fbe71972c1a2fc05\/a-house-of-dynamite-idris-elba-netflix-1280.jpg#\" alt=\"a-house-of-dynamite-idris-elba-netflix-1280.jpg \" height=\"465\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2025\/10\/11\/9c709548-0ab0-443c-82d5-7ab34506455e\/thumbnail\/620x465\/f22a65c8c83c2503fbe71972c1a2fc05\/a-house-of-dynamite-idris-elba-netflix-1280.jpg 1x, https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2025\/10\/11\/9c709548-0ab0-443c-82d5-7ab34506455e\/thumbnail\/1240x930\/339c1d18f6542cffebf25061d75df97c\/a-house-of-dynamite-idris-elba-netflix-1280.jpg 2x\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">Idris Elba as the President of the United States facing a decision of nuclear retaliation in &#8220;A House of Dynamite.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                Eros Hoagland\/Netflix<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Noah Oppenheim, a former president of NBC News, wrote the script, which dramatizes what he calls &#8220;the insanity that we would expect a single human being with limited preparation to decide in a matter of minutes the fate of all mankind.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Bigelow, whose previous movies include <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pictures\/best-picture-the-hurt-locker\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">&#8220;The Hurt Locker&#8221;<\/a><\/span> (an all-too-real look at the war in Iraq) and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pictures\/oscars-2013-best-picture-nominees\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">&#8220;Zero Dark Thirty&#8221;<\/a><\/span> (about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden) applied her trademark authenticity to the unthinkable. &#8220;It&#8217;s my responsibility as a filmmaker, if I&#8217;m presenting an environment that really exists, to be as authentic as possible,&#8221; she said.  <\/p>\n<p>Bigelow says she did not seek cooperation from the Pentagon for the film: &#8220;I felt that we needed to be more independent. But that being said, we had multiple tech advisors who have worked in the Pentagon. They were with me every day we shot.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>One military consultant was retired Lt. Gen. Dan Karbler. &#8220;Never in a million years would I have thought that I would have been in this position,&#8221; he said.  <\/p>\n<p>Karbler nailed his audition when he opened his first Zoom call with Bigelow like this: &#8220;&#8216;This is the DDO from the Pentagon convening a strategic conference. This conference is Top Secret. Please bring the President into the conference.&#8217; And I stopped there and clicked on my camera and I said, &#8216;Ladies and gentlemen, that&#8217;s how the worst day of America&#8217;s history will begin.'&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>I noted, &#8220;That doesn&#8217;t sound like something you were ad-libbing?&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was not ad-libbing at all,&#8221; said Karbler. &#8220;That comes from a lot of practice.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>He was on a movie set, but Karbler took command of the actors just as he once did with the real soldiers at Fort Greeley, Alaska, the front line of defense against an incoming missile. He described those scenes as &#8220;super-realistic.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>He said. &#8220;I have a son and daughter, and they&#8217;re both missile defenders. [In such a scenario, the U.S. would have less than 10 minutes to make the decisions and get interceptors airborne.]  <\/p>\n<p>Two interceptors are launched \u2013 the classic &#8220;bullet hitting a bullet.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That kill vehicle will go and basically run itself into the incoming missile,&#8221; said Karbler. &#8220;That closing velocity can be in excess of 30,000 miles an hour. I think the movie has it pretty accurate when they talk about 61% chance of killing it.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The watch officer in the White House Situation Room is played by Rebecca Ferguson.
