Here&#8217;s what to know as some vaccine guidance shifts."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>As the fall respiratory season approaches and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/cdc-vaccine-advisory-panel-covid-19-hepatitis-b-vaccines\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">differing recommendations<\/a><\/span> for children&#8217;s COVID-19 and flu shots cause confusion, who should be getting vaccinated to protect against illness?<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention&#8217;s vaccine advisory committee, known as the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, or ACIP, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cdc-acip-recap-measles-mmrv-covid-vaccines\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">voted to change recommendations<\/a><\/span> for the COVID-19 vaccine \u2014 and on Oct. 6, they were <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cdc-acip-vaccine-recommendations-covid-chickenpox\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">made official by the CDC&#8217;s acting director<\/a><\/span>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ACIP has changed in recent months, with\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-cdc-vaccine-advisory-panel-names\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">all new members<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/new-cdc-acip-members-covid-vaccine-critics\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">picked by<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is known for\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/new-cdc-acip-members-covid-vaccine-critics\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">raising doubts about vaccines<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s where recommendations currently stand. \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Flu shots<\/h2>\n<p>Guidance on the flu shot for kids is consistent across top medical groups: Children 6 months and older are generally advised to get the shot.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The CDC recommends that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/vaccines\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">everyone 6 months and older<\/a>\u00a0get a flu vaccine every season, with rare exceptions.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/aapnews\/news\/32712\/AAP-releases-2025-26-flu-vaccine-recommendations?autologincheck=redirected\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a>\u00a0(AAP) also recommends that everyone 6 months and older without medical contradictions get vaccinated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/vaccine-safety\/vaccine-pregnant.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pregnant women<\/a>, flu shots \u2014 specifically the injection, not\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/flumist-vaccine-nasal-spray-home-cost-age\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">the nasal spray<\/a><\/span> \u2014 are also recommended by both the CDC and AAP.<\/p>\n<p>Protecting kids from the flu is important because infections can lead to hospitalizations and sometimes be deadly, the CDC says. During the 2023-24 flu season, for example, the CDC reported<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/whats-new\/2023-2024-flu-deaths-children.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/spotlights\/2023-2024\/2023-2024-flu-deaths-children.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nearly 200 flu-related deaths among<\/a>\u00a0children in the U.S. Most of them were eligible for a vaccine but were not fully vaccinated, the CDC said.<\/p>\n<p>Flu season typically starts in December and peaks in February, so the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/when-to-get-flu-shot-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">optimal time to get vaccinated<\/a><\/span> is heading into the season,<strong>\u00a0<br \/><\/strong>doctors say. It takes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/hcp\/vis\/vis-statements\/flu.html#:~:text=CDC%20recommends%20everyone%206%20months,protection%20to%20develop%20after%20vaccination.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">about 2 weeks for protection<\/a>\u00a0to develop after vaccination.<\/p>\n<h2>COVID vaccine<\/h2>\n<p>For the COVID-19 vaccine, advice currently varies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the latest updated guidance, the CDC recommends people make individual, informed decisions about COVID-19 vaccination, declining to specifically recommend it. This is a change from previous guidance, since it drops recommendations for even children at high risk.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covid\/vaccines\/stay-up-to-date.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CDC<\/a>\u00a0said parents of healthy children ages 6 months to 17 years old should discuss the benefits with a health care provider and\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cdc-kids-covid-19-vaccine-recommendation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">&#8220;may receive&#8221;<\/a><\/span>\u00a0it, but the agency\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covid\/vaccines\/stay-up-to-date.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">stops short of recommending the shot<\/a>. The agency broadly recommended COVID-19 vaccines for moderately or severely immunocompromised children.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/covid-19-shot-recommendations-american-academy-of-pediatrics-cdc\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">The American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a><\/span>, however, recently shared\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/medical-organizations-kicked-out-cdc-vaccine-workgroups-acip\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">vaccine recommendations<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that, for the first time in three decades, differ from U.S. government advice. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/redbook\/resources\/15585?_gl=1*x6sa7g*_ga*NzAzODcyMjAyLjE3NTU2MDg3MzY.*_ga_FD9D3XZVQQ*czE3NTU2MDg3MzYkbzEkZzEkdDE3NTU2MDg3NjIkajM0JGwwJGgw*_gcl_au*NTkzNjQ2NDkxLjE3NTU2MDg3NTM.*_ga_GMZCQS1K47*czE3NTU2MDg3NTQkbzEkZzEkdDE3NTU2MDg3NjIkajUyJGwwJGgw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the guidance<\/a>, the AAP is &#8220;strongly recommending&#8221; COVID-19 shots for children ages 6 months to 2 years old. For older children, shots are also advised but it&#8217;s up to parents&#8217; discretion, the AAP said.<\/p>\n<p>Other top medical groups have also shared recommendations differing from the CDC&#8217;s advice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idsociety.org\/ID-topics\/infectious-disease\/covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Infectious Diseases Society of America<\/a>, a medical association representing physicians and scientists who specialize in infectious diseases, recommends the COVID-19 vaccine for everyone ages 6 months and older.<\/p>\n<p>And a group of\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/california-hawaii-oregon-washington-vaccines-covid-west-coast-health-alliance-cdc\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">four West Coast states<\/a><\/span>\u00a0has joined together to issue recommendations on COVID-19 shots and other vaccines that differ from CDC guidance.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdph.ca.gov\/Programs\/CID\/DCDC\/CDPH%20Document%20Library\/Immunization\/IMM-1481.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The West Coast Health Alliance<\/a>\u00a0recommends the COVID vaccine for all children 6 months to 23 months old and those 2 to 18 years old with risk factors or who have never been vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made in September<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in a joint statement from Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Hawaii Gov. Josh Green, all Democrats, saying they were putting safety before politics.<\/p>\n<p>In the Northeast, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/federal-vaccine-recommendations-states-public-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">New York and its neighbors<\/a><\/span> created the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/site\/doh\/about\/press\/pr2025\/announce-northeast-public-health-collaborative.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Northeast Public Health Collaborative<\/a>, with\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/covid-vaccine-kathy-hochul-executive-order\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Gov. Kathy Hochul<\/a><\/span>\u00a0calling it a rebuke to Washington&#8217;s retreat from science. The voluntary coalition includes New York state, New York City, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every resident will have access to the COVID vaccine, no exceptions,&#8221; Hochul said in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/governor-hochul-issues-covid-19-vaccine-guidance-new-yorkers-partnership-northeast-public\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a statement<\/a>, which advises vaccinations for children 6 months to 18 years old.<\/p>\n<h2>Varying advice causing confusion for parents<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/doctors\/offit-paul-a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dr. Paul Offit<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a vaccine researcher at Children&#8217;s Hospital of Philadelphia and a former government adviser who has sparred with Kennedy for years \u2014 said that with the updated COVID-19 recommendation, &#8220;the good news is anyone can get the vaccine.&#8221; But &#8220;the bad news is that no one is encouraged to get it even if you&#8217;re in a high-risk group,&#8221; he recently told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>Varying advice has already\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/vaccines-child-immunization-recommendations-parents\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">caused confusion for parents<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, said he expects confusion around the COVID vaccine due to the panel&#8217;s recent vote.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What I think it means is that people are going to be uncertain whether or not the COVID-19 vaccine is a benefit to them,&#8221; he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/cdc-vaccine-panel-says-covid-19-shots-individual-choice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">told CBS News on Friday<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/what-parents-need-to-know-as-vaccination-rates-for-kids-continue-to-decline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Dr. C\u00e9line Gounder<\/a>, CBS News medical contributor and editor-at-large for public health at KFF Health News, says there&#8217;s &#8220;a lot of noise out there&#8221; when it comes to vaccines, but advises parents to &#8220;stick the course&#8221; and talk to your doctor about making sure children get all their necessary vaccinations.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- data-recirc-source=\"chartbeat\" --><\/p>\n<aside class=\"component list recirculation component--type-recirculation component--type-recirculation-collection\">\n<div class=\"component__heading-wrapper \">\n<h3 class=\"component__title\">Coronavirus Pandemic<br \/>\n                          <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/feature\/coronavirus\/?intcid=CNI-00-10aaa3a\" class=\"component__view-more component__view-more--lg\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"><br \/>\n                More<br \/>\n                <svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" class=\"icon__caret-right\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n                  <use xlink:href=\"#icon-caret-down\"\/>\n                <\/svg><br \/>\n              <\/a><br \/>\n                      <\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>    <!-- tags --><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author\">\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/team\/sara-moniuszko\/\" class=\"content-author__name\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Sara  Moniuszko<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"content-author__bio\">\n<div class=\"content-author__full-information\">\n<p class=\"content-author__text\">Sara Moniuszko is a health and lifestyle reporter at CBSNews.com.
