{"id":49610,"date":"2025-10-03T00:53:28","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T00:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/homeowners-trying-to-rebuild-after-altadenas-eaton-fire-face-concerns-over-lead-levels-in-soil\/"},"modified":"2025-10-03T00:53:28","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T00:53:28","slug":"homeowners-trying-to-rebuild-after-altadenas-eaton-fire-face-concerns-over-lead-levels-in-soil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/homeowners-trying-to-rebuild-after-altadenas-eaton-fire-face-concerns-over-lead-levels-in-soil\/","title":{"rendered":"Homeowners trying to rebuild after Altadena&#8217;s Eaton Fire face concerns over lead levels in soil"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><em>Altadena, California<\/em> \u2014 Armed with a spoon and sandwich bags, Gilien Silsby, a lifelong resident of Altadena, California, a Los Angeles suburb, digs up some of the land she&#8217;s called home for decades <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/pasadena-public-health-advisory-eaton-fire-soil-test-lead-level\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">to be tested for toxins<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Three generations of her family lost homes in January to the devastating Eaton Fire in Altadena, which, along with the Palisades Fire in Pacific Palisades, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/eaton-fire-death-toll-rises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">claimed more than 30 lives<\/a><\/span> and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/artist-creates-memories-los-angeles-area-wildfire-victims\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">destroyed more than<\/a><\/span> 16,000 homes in the L.A. area.<\/p>\n<p>Silsby   and her parents all plan to rebuild in Altadena, but before they break ground, they have to be sure their land is safe. <\/p>\n<p>The federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/lead-prevention\/prevention\/paint.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">banned lead-based paint<\/a> for residential use in 1978, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scienceexchange.caltech.edu\/topics\/sustainability\/ask-expert-sustainability\/ask-expert-fires\/francois-tissot-lead-water-soil-ash-eaton-fire\/lead-dust-ash-water-eaton-fire-francois-tissot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to numbers from Caltech<\/a>, more than 90% of the homes in Altadena were built before 1975.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their home was built in 1925,&#8221; Silsby   said of her parents. &#8220;I&#8217;m concerned because they are older, and I want to make sure that they aren&#8217;t exposed to anything that could be unhealthy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/667412ef37ee4392bddb5c90da3480f1?cover=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">final soil testing report<\/a> released last month in the wake of the Eaton Fire, the L.A. County Department of Public Health found a sizeable number of Altadena properties <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/losangeles\/news\/preliminary-soil-testing-results-show-elevated-lead-levels-near-eaton-fire-burn-scar\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">had significantly higher levels<\/a><\/span> of lead than what the state deemed safe. The county also found that lead concentration levels were &#8220;generally higher&#8221; in samples from the Eaton Fire area compared to the Palisades Fire area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lead concentration levels in soil of 80 milligrams per kilogram or less are considered safe, even for the most at-risk people, <a href=\"http:\/\/publichealth.lacounty.gov\/media\/eaton-soil-testing\/docs\/GUIDANCE_FOR_EVALUATIING_SOIL_SCREENING_RESULTS-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to<\/a> county health officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The University of Southern California is conducting its own testing project for concerned families.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know that lead is a dangerous contaminant that can be in places in or near fires,&#8221; said Sujeet Rao, director of the USC Dornsife Public Exchange, a public health initiative at the school that is leading the testing effort through its Contaminant Level Evaluation and Analysis for Neighborhoods program,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publicexchange.usc.edu\/la-wildfire-soil-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">or CLEAN<\/a>. &#8220;And that&#8217;s true whether your home burned down, or was partially damaged, or only had smoke damage, or even if you were down wind, and just sort of had a lot of smoke and ash fall in your yard.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Exposure to lead can cause brain and kidney damage and developmental delays.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The risk is that young children, or people who are pregnant, come in contact with soils that have really elevated levels of lead,&#8221; Rao said. &#8220;&#8230;Over time, that lead can accumulate in the body.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rao says USC&#8217;s findings were consistent with the county&#8217;s report, which found that lead contamination was present even after the Army Corps of Engineers scraped six inches of soil from damaged properties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why can&#8217;t you take another six inches?&#8221; Silsby   asked. &#8220;I am glad that we can do your own soil testing now, just to make sure it&#8217;s safe to build.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More than one in three Altadena homeowners say they have not gotten the soil testing they want, according to the Department of Angels, a local advocacy group.
