{"id":49368,"date":"2025-10-01T19:53:44","date_gmt":"2025-10-01T19:53:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/u-k-firm-ordered-to-reimburse-government-163-million-over-covid-era-contract-for-unusable-ppe-gowns\/"},"modified":"2025-10-01T19:53:44","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T19:53:44","slug":"u-k-firm-ordered-to-reimburse-government-163-million-over-covid-era-contract-for-unusable-ppe-gowns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/u-k-firm-ordered-to-reimburse-government-163-million-over-covid-era-contract-for-unusable-ppe-gowns\/","title":{"rendered":"U.K. firm ordered to reimburse government $163 million over COVID-era contract for unusable PPE gowns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><em>London<\/em> &#8211; A British High Court judge ruled Wednesday that a company linked to an underwear tycoon must repay the government more than 121 million pounds ($163 million) for breaching a contract to supply 25 million surgical gowns during the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/feature\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">coronavirus pandemic<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p> In an 87-page ruling, Justice Sara Cockerill found that the company, PPE Medpro, had &#8220;breached the contract&#8221; and that the Department of Health and Social Care was &#8220;entitled to the price of the gowns as damages,&#8221; though not to the cost of storing the gowns.<\/p>\n<p> The judge said the gowns &#8220;were not, contractually speaking, sterile, or properly validated as being sterile&#8221; and as a result, they &#8220;could not be used as sterile gowns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> PPE Medpro, which was established as the pandemic erupted in the spring of 2020, was a consortium led by Doug Barrowman, the husband of Michelle Mone, who had made her fortune though her lingerie brand Ultimo.<\/p>\n<p> The consortium was awarded the lucrative contracts by the former Conservative administration led by Prime Minister Boris Johnson <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/ppe-manufacturing-business-transformations\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">to supply personal protective equipment<\/a><\/span>, or PPE, during the pandemic, after Mone had recommended it to ministers.<\/p>\n<p> Under the fast-track model employed by the government at the time, preferential treatment was given to companies recommended by politicians. She has taken a leave of absence from Parliament to &#8220;clear her name&#8221; over the scandal.<\/p>\n<p>Both Mone and Barrowman, who have denied wrongdoing, were furious at the judgment.<\/p>\n<p>Mone described it as &#8220;shocking but all too predictable&#8221; and &#8220;nothing less than an establishment win for the government in a case that was too big for them to lose.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Her husband blasted it as a &#8220;travesty of justice&#8221; and &#8220;a whitewash of the facts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Johnson&#8217;s government was hit with several scandals during and after the coronavirus pandemic, including facing fierce public backlash \u2014 and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/boris-johnson-fined-breaking-his-own-uk-covid-rules-partygate\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">being fined personally<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u2014 for breaching the country&#8217;s COVID safety regulations by allowing <span class=\"link\"><a
