But a new eruption was not to blame for the foggy scene this week, scientists said. Instead, ash from the blast that occurred 45 years ago had suddenly begun to swirl around the mountain.<\/p>\n<p>Strong winds in the area caused the decades-old debris to circulate,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/hans-public\/notice\/DOI-USGS-CVO-2025-09-16T17%3A22%3A23%2B00%3A00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to<\/a> the United States Geological Survey and forecasters in Portland, which is about 50 miles away from the summit of Mount St. Helens across the Oregon border.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mt. A screenshot from the footage that shows the volcano in clearer weather is posted beside the live video as a comparison.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-original\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2025\/09\/17\/5a5a3b22-7896-47c0-a918-8e023fe31661\/mount-st-helens.png#\" alt=\"mount-st-helens.png \" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/2025\/09\/17\/5a5a3b22-7896-47c0-a918-8e023fe31661\/mount-st-helens.png 1x\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">Mount St. Helens on a clear day, right, versus Tuesday morning, Sept. 16, when strong winds caused ash from the 1980 eruption to swirl around the volcano.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                U.S. Geological Survey<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>USGS issued an advisory at around 10:45 a.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday that acknowledged the whirl of old volcanic material, noting that strong winds were &#8220;resuspending ash at Mount St. Helens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Strong easterly\u2013southeasterly winds in the vicinity of Mount St. Helens have picked up loose volcanic ash deposited during the 1980 eruptions and are carrying it to the west\u2013northwest,&#8221; the advisory said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The agency noted that commercial pilots flying over the region had reported the ash, and warned that, although an eruption was not occurring, the ash itself &#8220;should be considered hazardous and could be damaging to aircraft and health.&#8221; No changes to alerts for the volcano or aviation were needed, though, according to USGS.<\/p>\n<p>Mount St. Helens erupted on May 17, 1980, in a devastating blast that produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/volcanoes\/mount-st.-helens\/science\/1980-cataclysmic-eruption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the biggest landslide on record<\/a> and is considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/geology-and-ecology-of-national-parks\/ecology-mount-st-helens-national-monument#:~:text=The%201980%20volcanic%20eruption&amp;text=%5B4%5D%20The%20eruption%20blasted%20away,and%20exciting%20ecological%20topic%20today.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the most economically destructive volcanic event<\/a> in U.S. history.
