{"id":47219,"date":"2025-09-12T19:57:25","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T19:57:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/uber-denies-rides-to-passengers-with-disabilities-justice-department-claims-in-lawsuit\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T19:57:25","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T19:57:25","slug":"uber-denies-rides-to-passengers-with-disabilities-justice-department-claims-in-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/uber-denies-rides-to-passengers-with-disabilities-justice-department-claims-in-lawsuit\/","title":{"rendered":"Uber denies rides to passengers with disabilities, Justice Department claims in lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>The Justice Department has filed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-sues-uber-denying-rides-passengers-service-dogs-wheelchairs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a $125 million lawsuit against Uber<\/a>, alleging that the ride-sharing company discriminates against passengers with disabilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The department said Uber violated the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/tag\/americans-with-disabilities-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Americans with Disabilities Act<\/a>, which prohibits discrimination based on disability, by routinely\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/lakeview-woman-disability-uber-drivers\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">refusing to serve individuals<\/a><\/span>\u00a0with disabilities, charging cleaning fees because of service animal shedding, and charging cancellation fees to riders who are &#8220;unlawfully denied service.&#8221; Uber said in a statement that it disagrees with the DOJ&#8217;s allegations.<\/p>\n<p>The ADA requires ride-sharing companies to allow service animals accompany people with disabilities on rides and provide rides and assistance to people with stowable wheelchairs and mobility devices, the Justice Department said.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, reviewed by CBS News, highlighted that Uber is <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/minnesota\/news\/people-with-disabilities-struggle-reliable-transportation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">the largest ride-share service<\/a><\/span> in the U.S., and said that &#8220;many individuals with disabilities increasingly rely on Uber&#8217;s services to meet their transportation needs\u2014including to travel to work, medical appointments, religious services, and other important places.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The department said the company has refused to reasonably modify its policies &#8220;to avoid discriminating against riders with disabilities&#8221; or train drivers in ADA compliance. The issues mean &#8220;individuals with disabilities have experienced significant delays, missed appointments, and have been left stranded in inclement weather,&#8221; the department said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a statement in response to the lawsuit, Uber said every driver must acknowledge and agree to the service animal policy and &#8220;all applicable accessibility laws.&#8221; Drivers who violate Uber policies face &#8220;decisive action,&#8221; including &#8220;permanent account deactivation,&#8221; the company said. Uber <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/uber-settles-ada-suit-fees-charged-disabled-riders\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">settled the lawsuit in 2022<\/a><\/span>, compensating more than 65,000 users.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The new lawsuit includes allegations from over a dozen people with disabilities, including blind passengers who alleged they experienced frequent ride denials and people who use wheelchairs or mobility aids who said Uber drivers refused to assist them or stow their devices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Uber denies service to hundreds, and potentially even thousands, of individuals with disabilities who travel with service animals, who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices, or whose appearance or involuntary behavior because of their disabilities may offend, annoy, or inconvenience drivers,&#8221; the lawsuit said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit is seeking a court order to stop Uber from discriminating against customers with disabilities, force the company to modify its policies to comply with the ADA and train its staff and drivers on the legislation. It also demands Uber pay monetary damages to riders who have been affected and a civil penalty &#8220;to vindicate the public&#8217;s interest in eliminating disability discrimination.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For too long, blind riders have suffered repeated ride denials by Uber because they are traveling with a service dog,&#8221; said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department&#8217;s Civil Rights Division in the news release. &#8220;This lawsuit seeks to end this persistent discrimination and allow riders with disabilities to use Uber.
