So far this year, inflation has stayed at 3% or lower, with <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cpi-report-july-2025-inflation-trump-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">July&#8217;s CPI reading<\/a><\/span> at 2.7%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite that, inflation has been creeping higher in recent months, edging away from the Federal Reserve&#8217;s\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/federal-reserve-meeting-today-fed-fomc-interest-rate-trump-powell\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">2% annual target.<\/a><\/span>\u00a0That&#8217;s causing some Americans to feel more sour about the economy, with a recent\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cbs-news-poll-economy-ratings-uncertain-03-09-2025\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">CBS News poll<\/a><\/span>\u00a0finding that two-thirds of consumers said prices in the past few weeks have continued to rise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>What economists say<\/h2>\n<p>Some economists point to the Trump administration&#8217;s wide-ranging tariffs as pushing prices higher. That&#8217;s because U.S. businesses pay the import duties to the federal government and then pass on some of those costs to consumers in the form of costlier goods.<\/p>\n<p>So far in 2025, the Federal Reserve has held off on cutting rates due to the potential for tariffs to reignite inflation. Because rate reductions make it cheaper to borrow, they can spur businesses and consumers to open their wallets, adding to inflationary pressures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet with the labor market <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jobs-report-today-august-2025-three-takeways-federal-reserve\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">showing signs of strain<\/a><\/span>, Fed Chair Jerome Powell last month signaled that the door may be <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jerome-powell-jackson-hole-speech-interest-rate-federal-reserve\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">open for a rate cut<\/a><\/span> at the central bank&#8217;s Sept. 17 meeting.
