{"id":464,"date":"2025-01-23T09:21:12","date_gmt":"2025-01-23T09:21:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/meta-says-it-didnt-force-users-to-follow-president-trump-on-facebook-and-instagram\/"},"modified":"2025-01-23T09:21:12","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T09:21:12","slug":"meta-says-it-didnt-force-users-to-follow-president-trump-on-facebook-and-instagram","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/meta-says-it-didnt-force-users-to-follow-president-trump-on-facebook-and-instagram\/","title":{"rendered":"Meta says it didn&#8217;t force users to follow President Trump on Facebook and Instagram"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Meta is denying claims circulating on social media that it forced Facebook and Instagram users to follow <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/trump-executive-orders-actions-first-day-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">President Trump<\/a><\/span>&#8216;s official accounts, saying the changes some users noticed were standard practices tied to the transition of the POTUS account from the previous administration to the incoming one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company also said that it is working to resolve an issue on Instagram that temporarily blocked certain political terms, including &#8220;Democrats&#8221; and &#8220;Republican,&#8221; from search results.<\/p>\n<p>Some Facebook and Instagram users <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo?fbid=122106363206724583&amp;set=a.122100669764724583&amp;comment_id=2613346895518008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported<\/a> on Monday that their accounts automatically followed President Trump, Vice President Vance, and first lady Melania Trump&#8217;s accounts under the @POTUS, @VicePresident, and @FLOTUS handles, respectively. Some said they never followed the accounts in the first place, and when they tried to unfollow the pages they were prevented from doing so.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meta spokesperson Andy Stone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@andymstone\/post\/DFImiJsPblY?xmt=AQGzz_r09JETH9seBQq_o6FAh9N54zEdHDMHxy_MSpVL2A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> the company did not make people&#8217;s accounts follow the official presidential Facebook and Instagram accounts. Instead, people who had previously followed the official POTUS account saw it updated to reflect President Trump <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/trump-presidential-inauguration-day-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">taking office<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is the same procedure we followed during the last presidential transition,&#8221; Stone said, adding that people may experience delays when they try to follow or unfollow &#8220;as these accounts change hands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meta&#8217;s public affairs director Nkechi Nneji told CBS News, &#8220;Meta doesn&#8217;t make anyone follow any account and we never have.&#8221; Nneji said people might have forgotten that they opted to follow the official White House accounts during previous administrations.<\/p>\n<p>Katie Harbath, Facebook&#8217;s former public policy director for global elections from 2011 to 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@katieharbath\/post\/DFEF4Q-hl2X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> her team was involved in helping establish the company&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2021\/01\/20\/facebook-instagram-transfer-accounts-followers-biden-administration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">first presidential social media transition<\/a> as Obama left office in 2017.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration followed the same protocols <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2021\/01\/20\/facebook-instagram-transfer-accounts-followers-biden-administration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">again in 2021<\/a> when they passed the accounts over to the Biden administration. The process allows for each incoming president to have a clean slate for their social media profiles.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That would give them the opportunity to set up the page how they want, make sure it&#8217;s got the cover photo, all that jazz,&#8221; Harbath told CBS News. &#8220;Then it was decided that under the assumption that people are following the institution \u2014 regardless of who&#8217;s in it \u2014 that the followers would be mirrored over, copied over to the new page.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In general, when users want to unfollow an account on Facebook, they can click the ellipsis on that profile page and press the &#8220;unfollow&#8221; or &#8220;block&#8221; button.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, some Instagram users <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@ashley.goes.hiking\/post\/DFE_ChxRVhu?xmt=AQGzz_r09JETH9seBQq_o6FAh9N54zEdHDMHxy_MSpVL2A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported<\/a> being unable to see results for &#8220;Democrat&#8221; and other political words when they searched them, but that they were able to see results for &#8220;Republican.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Stone <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/andymstone\/status\/1881683852537778187\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">responded<\/a> to the claims on Tuesday, saying a technical issue was &#8220;affecting people&#8217;s ability to search for a number of different hashtags on the platform \u2014 not just those on the left.&#8221; Nneji told CBS News on Wednesday that technical issues with searches for political and non-political terms had mostly been resolved on the mobile app.<\/p>\n<p>CBS News searched variations of &#8220;Democrat&#8221; and &#8220;Republican&#8221; on the mobile version of Instagram on Wednesday and returned millions of results.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, on the desktop version of Instagram, the search returned no results for &#8220;Republican&#8221; and &#8220;Democrats,&#8221; but did yield results for &#8220;Republicans&#8221; and &#8220;Democrat.&#8221; Additionally, there were no results for other words, like &#8220;Constitution,&#8221; on the desktop version, but over a million results on the mobile app.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump&#8217;s personal Facebook and Instagram accounts were\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-facebook-suspension-two-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">suspended<\/a><\/span>\u00a0following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, after the company <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/facebook-bans-trump-joe-biden-president-inauguration\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">said his posts<\/a><\/span> incited violence. His accounts were\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/donald-trump-facebook-instagram-active-today-2023-02-09\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">reactivated<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in 2023.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The timing of the latest issues raised concerns among some Facebook and Instagram users. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg attended President Trump&#8217;s inauguration on Monday, along with other tech leaders including X owner Elon Musk and Amazon executive chair Jeff Bezos.<\/p>\n<p>Zuckerberg <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/meta-facebook-instagram-fact-checking-mark-zuckerberg\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">announced the end<\/a><\/span>\u00a0of Facebook&#8217;s third-party fact checking program on Jan. 7 because of what he said were concerns of bias and the over-enforcement of rules. The platform will instead adopt a community approach similar to X&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/how-metas-new-community-notes-program-may-work-as-fact-checking-ends-for-facebook-instagram\/?intcid=CNM-00-10abd1h\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Community Notes<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Zuckerberg also announced the platform would start <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1525382954801931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">phasing in<\/a> more recommendations for political content, reversing a decision made in <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2021\/02\/reducing-political-content-in-news-feed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">February 2021<\/a> when Zuckerberg <a href=\"https:\/\/s21.q4cdn.com\/399680738\/files\/doc_financials\/2020\/q4\/FB-Q4-2020-Conference-Call-Transcript.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> he received feedback that people &#8220;don&#8217;t want politics and fighting to take over their experience.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Joel Kaplan, Meta&#8217;s chief global affairs officer, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2025\/01\/meta-more-speech-fewer-mistakes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a statement<\/a> on Meta&#8217;s website that the shift was &#8220;an attempt to return to the commitment to free expression.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That means being vigilant about the impact our policies and systems are having on people&#8217;s ability to make their voices heard, and having the humility to change our approach when we know we&#8217;re getting things wrong,&#8221; Kaplan said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Corynne McSherry, legal director for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Electronic Frontier Foundation<\/a>, a nonprofit digital rights organization, told CBS News social platforms are not transparent enough about how their platforms work for users.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s just a real fundamental problem,&#8221; McSherry said. &#8220;The problem though [that is] happening does reflect a lot of confusion and difficulty from the user perspective to really understand how to even to, you know, set [and] arrange their settings, so they&#8217;re not getting content that they don&#8217;t want.
